About this listen

Although T. E. Lawrence, commonly known as "Lawrence of Arabia", died in 1935, the story of his life has captured the imagination of succeeding generations. Seven Pillars of Wisdom is a monumental work in which he chronicles his role in leading the Arab Revolt against the Turks during the First World War. A reluctant leader, and wracked by guilt at the duplicity of the British, Lawrence nevertheless threw himself into his role, suffering the blistering desert conditions and masterminding military campaigns which culminated in the triumphant march of the Arabs into Damascus.

An excellent writing by the man himself. The reader must read between the lines often to grasp the full effect regarding the adventures of this tortured and conflicted hero ravaged by war, conflicting loyalties and loss. Lends great understanding to the making of the modern Middle East.

Better than my expectation

Almost an epic poem in itself. An insight first into a rebellion, but more into a man.

Epic

TNarration: performance is a bit more dramatic than necessary, which slightly stymies comprehension. Purple prose further complicates comprehension.

Story: informative, revelatory, penetrating exegesis of Middle Eastern cultures and their betrayal by the West.

Essential to understanding Middle East history and

I gave this book a second go after some time to muse upon it, and was struck by its spectacular prose. Lawrence writes so wonderfully and the narrator is a joy.

Better the second time round

Initially this book was difficult for me to get involved with but as the story continued I felt as if I were on a camel riding next to Lawrence himself. This daring first hand account of the stirrings of a very complex future captivated me and left me sorrowful by the end of it.

A true epic.

One of the greatest books ever written - my personal favorite. The narrator could easily pass for the voice of Lawrence himself. I wish i could give it 100 stars. Absolutely superb!!!

The book is famous and does not need rating. I want however to emphasize the masterful performance of the voice artist reading the book, Roy McMillan. His voice is pleasant, as his reading (pronunciation, prosody, rhythm, structuring the text) make listening not only easy but also pure joy. Also I appreciate his attention to adequate pronuncation of foreign names, which in this book of course is essential.

I discovered this voice artist through this book, and since then I have been looking for audio books preferably read by Roy McMillan.

On the downside, this quality of reading has made me very picky when it comes to selecting audio books. I want this quality to be present everywhere, and it isn't.

Masterfully read

The stories are great, but some of the events are repetitive or get clouded by names and tribes. Sometimes it was hard to create a clear picture, and others I could picture myself there. A great listen in all if you have interest in the subject and the man.

great adventure
