About this listen

Arnold College, Oxford. When Sir George Kemp returns to his old university to celebrate the launch of a new barge, he can't help noticing a photograph on the wall: the 1939 rowing team, of whom George had been the cox... Sixty years earlier had been a heady, intoxicating time for George and the crew. But with conflict inevitable, the nine friends find the dreaming spires giving way to the nightmare of modern war.©2003 William Woodruff (P)2014 Audible, Inc. This is the worst of the 100 or so books I have listened to. The concept sounds interesting, but the writing seems like a first draft rather than a finished product. Characters are not developed, there is no conversation - on the rare occasion the author puts words in a character's voice, it is a long monologue - and the scenes that should have drama are rote recitals of dry facts. My first thought was that the author might have died after sketching out the book, and his realtives somehow got it published!
