About this listen

When two girls are abducted and killed in Missouri, journalist Camille Preaker is sent back to her home town to report on the crimes. Long haunted by a childhood tragedy and estranged from her mother for years, Camille suddenly finds herself installed once again in her family's mansion, reacquainting herself with her distant mother and the half sister she barely knows - a precocious 13-year-old who holds a disquieting grip on the town.

As Camille works to uncover the truth about these violent crimes, she finds herself identifying with the young victims - a bit too strongly. Clues keep leading to dead ends, forcing Camille to unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past to get at the story. Dogged by her own demons, Camille will have to confront what happened to her years before if she wants to survive this homecoming.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Camille. She's struggling. She's honest. I could identify.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Milk, poison and teeth - a golf-cart murder mistery.

Any additional comments?

Reading Gillian Flynn is always a pleasure. But I liked this book best. It's sharp to the point. Maternal love can be a toxic mixture of milk and poison. This story beats most psychiatric textbooks in its precise description of 'borderlinogenic' circumstances. And as usual the writing is first-rate: intelligent, exciting, excellent. Matches 'Life of Pi' in more than one aspect. Be aware of the teeth!

Sharp description of toxic maternal love

I still enjoyed this. It was a well done whodunit with an edge. Flynn is EXPERT at drawing acid tongued, vile women and there is a plethora of them in this fast paced, edgy book.

I was NOT a fan of the reader. She sounds WAY too old! The girl in this book is in her early thirties and this reader sounds much older.

It was good, but very different from Gone Girl, which I LOVED, and wanted another one of course. This is very different, but still great.

Not Gone Girl but still great.

Perhaps not as intriguing as Gone Girl as it was a bit more predictable and the storyline not as intriguing. I still enjoyed it a great deal.

I watched it because of the series, I needed an end for the story and I enjoyed it more than the series

I am now utterly addicted to audio books. This one really was exceptional.

I have learned that you have to enjoy the narrator as is.

Great story! Highly recommended!

Despite a flash of insight in chapter 2 that I spied the killer, I was inexorably drawn along - befuddled and misdirected - towards a bitter-sweet conclusion. Great book; unique point of view; queuing the next from Gillian Flynn as I write..

disquietingly real

Don’t read this if you have a narcissistic mother. Otherwise a good yarn well written.

Needs a trigger warning.

Great book, loved the depth to the characters and how different and original they were from your typical main characters, made the story so much more enjoyable and entertaining. Performance was absolutely amazing, loved the accents! The story itself overall was great though I felt the ending lacked a bit of punch but otherwise fantastic!

Original & Thrilling

Would you consider the audio edition of Sharp Objects to be better than the print version?

While it's the first Gillian Flynn's novels, It's the last one I've read. It didn't reach the dizzying heights of Girl Gone or Dark Places, but it's still a wonderful novel with fast pacing and brilliant narration.

What other book might you compare Sharp Objects to and why?

Dark Places. The MC is not as well developed as Libby Day in Dark Places, but she's definitely up there in status.

Which character – as performed by Liza Ross – was your favorite?

The MC, Camille

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There were many, but in the bath, her mother poisoning her and the moment she's almost given up and comes to the realisation of everything that has happened.

A sharp beginning
