About this listen

In 1859, the Shawtuck Lunatic Asylum opened in rural Delaware County as the new standard for the treatment of the mentally ill. But now this huge, Gothic structure sits brooding and abandoned, brought down by a long, sordid history of depravity, mistreatment, and murder. It may be rotting up on Shawtuck Mountain, but it's not alone.

Oswald "Oz" Patterson is the new sheriff of Delaware County. After a near-death experience as a cop in the South Bronx, he decided to move away from the inner city and live a safer life. But Oz will find that he has only traded one nightmare for an even worse one.

wonderful story with excellent narration

This was a good story and I love that it was about the horrors done to the mentally ill back in the day. Also this narration was excellent! Skyler has a voice that I could listen to everyday. He had great pronunciation and read each character a little differently. This was a great audiobook.

Brilliant! Beautifully done! Wow!

I can sum up Shawtuck Asylum in two words. BRILLIANT PERFECTION! I have listened straight through twice and I’m going back in for a third time! The writing is PERFECTION!The prologue giving the history of Shawtuck and other asylums of its kind is not only interesting, it is the perfect set up for what follows! No spoilers! Just trust me please and DO NOT skip the prologue! All will become clear later! After that prologue, THIS fascinated listener was ready to sign up for a tour! Then as the story got rolling, the tour was definitely OFF the table! I listened to Shawtuck Asylum in horrified, stunned, albeit delighted AWE! The plot is drawn magnificently! The story flows smoothly and when all is revealed, everything made perfect sense! I was left with no unanswered questions. I’m not going into plot details because I don’t want to spoil the fun for anyone. And the epilogue? Oh my heart, beyond perfection! It just does not get any better. The narration bringing this story to life is amazing PERFECTION! Clear, concise, at times hypnotic, shiver inducing perfection! I could tell exactly what every character was feeling by the excellent use of tonal inflection, vocal emotion and timing! A story of this caliber, combined with this level of professional performance is truly the PERFECT combination! Five stars!

Amazing story

This is a really interesting story. Although the place it talks about isn't real. Places like this did exist. This book brought all of that to life. Would definitely recommend this one to everyone who loves fiction mixed with a little nonfiction

Shawtuck Asylum

If you enjoy stories about haunted asylums or just stories that are creepy enough to give you pause, this is a great short book. The first part reads like a textbook about the horrific history of insane asylums and sets up the story in a great way. The mixture of the local tales surrounding Shawtuck mixed with the ghost hunters later in the book all comes together by the end.

Without giving away spoilers. I would have liked more background on some of the creepier characters and more of the "creepy" action toward the end of the book. All in all, I would recommend this as a great listen for those who are looking for some Halloween scares.

The narrator did a great job and his performance added a lot to my enjoyment. I will definitely be looking for more books by both the author and the narrator. I was given the chance to listen to this audiobook by the publisher/narrator/author and chose to review it.

Welcome to the Madhouse

Shawtuck Asylum by Richard McCrohan is a great horror story. It starts off a little slow but once it picks up trust me it picks up. I loved the fact that with the plot of the story I could not figure out if this was more a paranormal story or killers in an asylum story. The characters were all very well written and believable. Something that stood out for me was the authors notes at the end. Stating how why this story is fictional what was described to happen in mental institutions was very much a real thing and urged the listener to look into it. However the narrator Skyler Morgan is the true highlight of Shawtuck Asylum. He managed to not only tell the story brilliantly but really bring the world to life. Never once did I think to myself good story bad narrator. I will be looking into other books narrated by Skyler Morgan now. All in all I would recommend Shawtuck Asylum to anyone who likes a good thriller or horror story.

Great book

Really liked this book. Liked that it was based on actual events related to asylums. Worth your time. The narrator is one of my favorites. He does a great job.
