Auf der Thor-Brücke, unweit des Anwesens der wohlhabenden Familie Gibson, wird eines Morgens die Leiche von Maria Gibson gefunden. Sie starb an einem Kopfschuss. Für die Polizei ist die Gouvernante Grace Dunbar die Täterin. Tatsächlich ist die Beweislast erdrückend: Nicht nur wurde bei ihr die passende Pistole gefunden, auch waren die beiden Frauen zum Tatzeitpunkt auf der Brücke verabredet. Als der Witwer Neil Gibson nun Sherlock Holmes darum bittet, Grace Dunbars Unschuld zu beweisen, scheint auch noch das Motiv klar: Der Goldmagnat hatte ein Verhältnis mit dem Kindermädchen.
