About this listen

Shoot first....

Death hits close to home for Elizabeth “E. M.” Danniher - or, rather, close to Hovel, as she's dubbed her decrepit rental house in rustic Sherman, Wyoming. Her elderly neighbor has killed a man apparently after her Western artifacts. As a former top-flight national TV reporter, Elizabeth knows self-defense can satisfy the legal system, yet leave her neighbor in danger.

Doing what she does best - asking questions - Elizabeth sidesteps her boss and a nosy, jealous anchorman to inquire into an eccentric billionaire, ambitious curator, rival collectors, family feuds, and Cottonwood County crimes from a century ago.

As she digs deeper, Elizabeth is helped by friends. That's canine as well as human friends, and includes two male humans who'd definitely like to be more than friends. Before this is over, Elizabeth will need every one of them, as her questions push someone to decide that Elizabeth should...

...Die later.

It Gets Better and Better

This series gets better and better. I like Elizabeth Danniher and how she interacts with all of the characters. Elizabeth is smart and crafty and always finds a way to get the big story. I can't wait for the next book.

The librarian reading

I love these books, so I was able to stick it out despite the drab performance. Listening to this book was like listening to a librarian read to me.

Very entertaining

Patricia McLinn has crafted another entertaining installment in her series. The characters are well crafted and believable. I highly recommend this book and entire series to fans of cozy mysteries.

Entertaining

The story is good and the characters are entertaining but the author has a problem picking narrators. Book 1 and 2 had a narrator with a funny way of speaking. It was stilted and a little irritating when she was reading the main character's role, however she performed the other characters well. I didn't think I was going to write a review until I got to the third book (yes it's still worth reading the series) and found that she had been replaced by someone worse. Every character sounds the same and the narrator's voice and lack of affect might be enough for me to stop with this book...Maybe I'll get lucky and they'll change again!

Getting the next in the series ASAP

Thoroughly enjoying this series. Engaging mysteries, characters, red herrings, and twists. Not overshadowed by the romantic aspect. Excellent narrator.
Cast of characters (all the Sherman townsfolk it seems) getting a little hard to keep straight.

Horrible narration..what happened to the one from first books?

Don’t mess with what works. This narrative does not fit educated midwestern woman. Sounds like So Cali youngster.
