About this listen

Captain Harry Cathcart and Lady Rose Summer have entered into an engagement of convenience so Rose can avoid being sent to India with all the other failed debutantes. Rose's sharp intellect and radical ideas have served to repel her would-be suitors. Rose's parents are hardly thrilled that their only child is marrying a man in trade, but Harry comes from a good family and, at the very least, they hope he will keep their troublesome daughter out of mischief.

Unfortunately, even a pretend engagement cannot save Rose from trouble. Bored with endless parties, teas, and balls, she befriends Dolly Tremaine, a beautiful young girl newly arrived from the country and overwhelmed by the demands of the Season.

Rose is delighted to have a protege, but their friendship is cut tragically short when Dolly is found floating in a river. Harry must solve the mystery of Dolly's death, and keep Rose from being the murderer's next victim.

comfy cozy mystery

Again, many mistakes made because of actions that come before thought. Characters are always jumping to conclusions.

Misunderstandings

I save this series for when I am really fatigued and want a lighthearted (but not too silly) listen. This is a hoot, besides being a decent light period mystery, Narrator Davina Porter sounds like she's enjoying herself, and adds extra camp to the read. There are sublte winks and nods to authentic Edwardian lit and its imitators.

wittiest in series to date

I’ve listened to a lot of books this year. I’m almost embarrassed to say I’ve listened to over 200 in 2023 alone. I’ve listened to every different type and genre. This series I’ve found a wonderful break from all the terrible things that see, read and hear in the news. Heartwarming, suspenseful, funny entertaining I can’t say any more it was just wonderful!

Delightfuly entertaining!

If you enjoy danger and mystery without lots of gore and shallow characters, you will enjoy this series. Pleasant storyline with mystery and well developed characters.

Interesting, amusing cozy mystery

Harry and Rose are trying to hard to show the least most interest in the other. When they finally find a friendship that could develop into more, one incident after another gets in the way.

Great narration.

This is the third installment of the Edwardian murder series. It’s fun and not wildly inappropriate whereas a lot of novels have very descriptive love scenes, this one is more about the social aspects and the mystery. Rose, the protagonist, is a bit whiny but it completely fits not only into her character but her class in upper society at the times. Davina Porter is a star. She is as fabulous as always with narrating the audiobooks. If you have not listened to outlander (that’s how I found this… looking for davina) you are doing yourself an injustice. While the description in that book is vivid. It’s well written and Davina sweeps you away into the story. I would have her narrate my life.

Fun

More episodes of Rose adventures need to be written with her married and having children.
