About this listen

Chosen by truth. Marked for death. Halia must choose to save her kingdom, or let it fall.

Misroth’s king has died, and the entire kingdom is in mourning—or so it seems. After her father is crowned regent in his brother’s stead, Princess Halia discovers a terrible truth that could end her life. But when she flees to live in hiding, she discovers that the Royal Guard are not all she has to fear. Dark creatures stalk her, reports of oppression and war reach her ears, and her burden to protect her kingdom—at any cost—will not be silenced.

I enjoyed listening to The Silent Kingdom. I was pretty suprised with how much of the book took place when Princess Halia was younger. The theme of finding your voice and coming of age in turbulent times was powerful.

I also LOVED Sara's narration. She did an amazing job bringing all the characters to life and enhanced the best parts of the book. There were some parts that I wish the characters had some more depth, but the storyline was interesting.

If you're looking for a fantasy to curl up with, you may enjoy this story of a princess on the run and a kingdom in turmoil!

4.5/5, but you know Amazon doesn’t let you do that.

I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Sara Brode. The Silent Kingdom, by Rachel L. Shade, is book one in the Silent Kingdom trilogy. It is out now in all formats on Amazon.

This YA coming of age story follows Princess Halia, as she has to leave her home and live in hiding. She discovered a terrible truth, and found that she will get no understanding. Only punishment. In her exile, she finds a new found family. Acceptance for who she is now, and in spite of her lack of knowledge or ability to communicate like they would expect.

In the woods, however, there lurks terrible danger. Not only that, but she constantly worries the kings guards will discover where she is. The talk of war continues to rise. The guilt of running, even though she was a child, weighs heavy on her. It only grows more each day. Will her best friend, that seems to be growing into more, understand? Will he believe her when she explains the truth?

If you love a series that includes monsters, multiple villains, royal court and politics, magic, found family, and a strong FMC willing to fight for what she believes, then you will enjoy this first book in the series (I look forward to the rest). There is grief, death, and plenty of betrayal. We are left on a cliffhanger of wondering where certain characters are or what they will do.

Sarah did a fantastic job with the audiobook. When you can listen to a book and get lost in it, forgetting that there is only one narrator, you know they’ve done a great job making each character unique.

Fans of Throne of Glass and The Prison Healer, you will love this book.

It has all the best elements of fantasy—magic, betrayal, and twists I never saw coming.

I really liked Halia as a character, and thought the author did a fabulous job outlining her internal and external struggles, both with her own "worthiness" and her place within the kingdom.

The different scenes were so fun—each physical space that the book moved through was intentional and impactful.

I need to know what happens next, immediately.

I loved listening to this book. The narration really brings the story to life, and hearing the desperation in Halia's inner voice during tense moments was so valuable.
