About this listen

Murder. Scandal. Politics. And one billionaire heiress so dangerous in so many ways. An explosive Lucas Davenport thriller from number one New York Times best-selling author John Sandford.

All hell has broken loose in the capital. An influential state senator has been caught with something very, very nasty on his office computer. The governor can’t believe it - the senator’s way too smart for that, even if he is from the other party. Something’s not right. As Davenport investigates, the trail leads to a political fixer who has disappeared, then - troublingly - to the Minneapolis police department itself, and most unsettling of all, to a woman who could give Machiavelli lessons in manipulation. She has very definite ideas about the way the world should work - along with the money, ruthlessness, and cold-blooded will to make it happen.

Sandford doesn't disappoint.

If you could sum up Silken Prey in three words, what would they be?

Classic Lucas Davenport novel. Great pacing, loved Richard Ferrone (he is the perfect narrator). Lots of twists and turns, but you can still follow the plot. I like how Sandford keeps the same side characters (Dell, Elle, Letty) and has Lucas work with them all.

What other book might you compare Silken Prey to and why?

You might also enjoy "The Burglar" books, also narrated by Richard Ferrone. Bernie Rhodenbarr (lead character) is a likable sort - similar to Lucas.

What does Richard Ferrone bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Ferrone brings a warmth to the story. He paces the thoughts and actions appropriately.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

NO, it was a great commuting book. 45 minutes in the morning and at night.

Another excellent Sanford book

Where does Silken Prey rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Sanford's' grasp on politics and police life is the best. I have all of his books. The only negative thing I can say is I detest Weather, Lucas Davenports' pushy, feminist wife.
She is not present in this book so much.

The stories this man weaves and how things work are amazing. His early books and this book are the best.

What did you like best about this story?

How criminal politics can get.

Which character – as performed by Richard Ferrone – was your favorite?

Always Lucas. Then, that F----- Flowers.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, loved the story, glad that Weather is not ruining it for anyone who doesn't swoon over pushy feminist thought.

Any additional comments?

He is a superb author.

Fast Paced. A solid Davenport book.

I have read this entire series and there are some duds. This is not one of them. The story stretches reality. However just enjoy the ride. It was a fun listen. Nice to have a good Lucas story with his great supporting cast: Del, Kid, Virgil, Weather are well represented.

Unbeatable

What made the experience of listening to Silken Prey the most enjoyable?

Narration is superb.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Davenport is not only my favorite character, he is my hero. Well, that's hyperbole, but Lucas is unromanticized as a cop and a human being. He has some rough edges, but they don't dominate his character, rather they round out his character.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

This is a book that is hard to put down.

Any additional comments?

This series, and the burgeoning one with that f***king Flowers, is my favorite. I've been trying to analyze how Sandford does it, and I keep coming back to character. Even the minor characters are well developed, believable, and instrumental to understanding the chief character, Davenport. It is more than a collection of well-wrought scenes; it is a compelling story.

Four for the "Prey"

Have read all 23 Prey books by John Sandford. Have a MAJOR CRUSH on Lucas Davenport, America's classic good boy/bad boy.

This Prey is a bit on the boring side - the characters and their interplay elicited some yawns. Usually I dive right into Sandford books and don't mind hitting my head on the bottom. That being said, Silken Prey deserves a four out of five.

Long live Lucas Davenport!

One of his best!

Sanford either has a sick imagination or access to the sick reality of actual murder cases to base his stories on. This was one of the sickest and I have to say one of the most exciting. Edge of your seat stuff.

Once again we're thrust into the world of Lucas Davenport and his band of crime fighters including his adopted daughter. You feel like you know these guys and that's what keeps Sanford's fans coming back for more. Good job Mr. Sandford. Looking forward to more stories about good decent people trying to stay sane in a sometimes insane world and stopping insane killers.
