About this listen
Just as it seems life is opening before Violet with unlimited possibilities for her future, her hometown of Atlanta is devastated by a citywide fire, and her idolized older brother heads off to France as an officer in the Great War. Violet's safe, tight-knit family is about to be tested beyond anything they have ever experienced, and her dreams for the future keep colliding with forces outside her control and a rapidly changing culture.
While she tries to rebuild her life from loss after loss, two very different young ministers both profess her place in their own dreams for the future. As her childhood faith is shaken to its very core, Violet must determine who she truly is, what she most wants, and what it means to love.

Story
The year is 1901, and the hustle and bustle of the holidays is descending on New York's Fifth Avenue. For the first time in her privileged life, Adelaide Forsythe couldn’t be happier about the prospect of a quiet Christmas. That’s not to say her transition from Missto Mrs. has been without challenge. Though she doesn’t regret marrying for love instead of wealth, she feels woefully unprepared to run her own household. Then, on the first Sunday of Advent, winter winds bring surprising change, first through a young orphan boy and then a seasoned housekeeper who seems too good to be true.

Story
Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

Who is Audrey Hoedemaker? It's a question her sister Maureen has heard more times than she can count, and she doesn't know what the short answer would be. Little sister, troubled teen, backpacker, musical theatre coach, con artist, childcare worker. Murderer. A tragic, traumatic childhood casts a long shadow on the Hoedemaker sisters. Maureen has worked hard to move beyond the violence of the past and build a good, honest life for herself. Audrey, however, just can't seem to do the same, careening from one state of chaos to another.

Story
Lucas knows the perfect night entails just three things: video games, wine, and pad thai. Peanuts are a must! Other people? Not so much. Why complicate things when he’s happy alone? Then one day the apartment board, a vexing trio of authority, rings his doorbell. And Lucas’s solitude takes a startling hike. They demand to see his frying pan. Someone left one next to the recycling room overnight, and instead of removing the errant object, as Lucas suggests, they insist on finding the guilty party. But their plan backfires. Colossally.

The 13 chapters of The Art of War, each devoted to one aspect of warfare, were compiled by the high-ranking Chinese military general, strategist, and philosopher Sun-Tzu. In spite of its battlefield specificity, The Art of War has found new life in the modern age, with leaders in fields as wide and far-reaching as world politics, human psychology, and corporate strategy finding valuable insight in its timeworn words.

When Heather McKinley dreamed of becoming a doctor, she imagined curing sick kids and sporting pink stethoscopes. She never anticipated the sleepless nights, grueling exams, and endless labs. And she certainly never knew that her medical school earned the nickname Dead Med thanks to the tragic history of students overdosing on illegal drugs. But Heather would never consider doing anything like that. That is, until her longtime boyfriend dumps her, she finds herself failing anatomy, and her world starts to crumble.

Perfectly Paced Faith Driven Story
Jennifer Q Hunt is a new to me author. Some Through the Fire is a good paced, faith driven, historical fiction. The audio book was outstanding. Rebecca Evans captured the emotional essence of this book with her inflection so well.
Scripture and faith elements were woven seamlessly and naturally throughout the story. The romance elements were not trite or overly done. If you love Lynn Austin’s historical fiction you will probably enjoy this book too. Loved the reminders of the simplicity of the gospel. I plan to purchase a print copy to highlight my favorite quotes including: “There is nothing that I will not give that I may know Him… If I have to understand God it is my own mind I worship and if I have to control him it’s my own will I worship, and if I have to feel him it’s my emotions I worship but if I only have to love and obey him then I worship him in spirit and in truth and in worshiping him I have life.”
Such a fantastic story!

I absolutely loved this story so much!!
This was a beautiful story of a family overcoming hardships around WW2 and had beautiful gospel truth woven throughout which made the whole thing so sweet. I especially loved the weaving of hymns throughout!

Profound Christian Truths
What a satisfying story! It has such likable characters going through some intensely tumultuous and challenging times (the Spanish Flu anyone?). I love how Hunt moves a story along, with multiple POV’s but in such fluid motion. This is NOT an easy task. Her books feel like a whole family affair, which I love. You become immersed in the world, the time period and even the church politics of the day. As always, Hunts ability to weave profound truth throughout her narrative is beautifully done. So if you’re not wanting a strong Christian message, then this isn’t the book for you!
Since this one was an audiobook, I wasn’t able to get as many quotes as normal, but this one made me stop and ponder, so I captured it the best I could:
“So you don’t preach against sin?”
“In a church like this it takes more courage to preach against sin such as complaining, materialism and selfishness, all things this body is guilty of and doesn’t want to acknowledge, than it is to preach against things that are already cultural taboos such as drinking and dancing. If people don’t condemn the sins of their own heart over than the sins of the world, there will be no growth or change.”
Thank you for gifting this audiobook Jennifer Q. Hunt! All opinions are my own.

Okay, but overmuch detail
I enjoyed parts of this book. I liked the godly influence, but otherwise, it was hard keeping all the characters straight. I listened over many days when I had time and didn’t make any notes. It was boring to me but I’m sure many will like it.
