About this listen

Acclaimed children's author Avi's many accolades include a Newbery Medal and Boston Globe-Horn Book Award. Inspired by true stories from the American Revolution, Sophia's War begins in 1776, when British troops arrive on the doorstep of 12-year-old Sophia Calderwood's home in New York. After the disappearance and possible capture of her brother - and the execution of Nathan Hale - Sophia has vowed to do all she can to help the cause for independence. But the war will test her in ways she never imagined.

Connecting History to fiction is very difficult, thus I admire the author‘s effort to think around Historical events.

I do not much like how Sophia had an admiration for a man much beyond her years, no matter the time period I don’t wish to see that as normal. I am glad that at the end she resolved to his fate as an enemy and spy. I believe that beyond that, the story was a good way to think around things that happened. I particularly admired that the man in which Sophia worked under was real, it is not easy to connect History with fiction. The fact that Sophia was a girl and that was why she was overlooked was a wise analysis of her character and so I admire that thought as well.

An Enjoyable Historical Novel

Set in the American Revolution, a smart and courageous girl 12-15 years old set out to get revenge on the British soldiers who put her brother into a horrible prison where he was tortured and murdered. She got it.

Perfect for middle school

I had my middle school classes read this book during our revolution unit and they loved it. It's 95% true so they loved picking out the true story an doing more research. Way better than traditional history learning!

The narrator needs work

A decent story, though the plot does drag. However, the narrator used a fake British accent for the main character, which was so grating that it detracted from the story.

Fantastic listen for the whole family!

My wife, daughters (10 & 8) and I listened to this on a road trip to Williamsburg and Yorktown. Every time we got back in the car, our kids said “turn in the book!” It kept everyone’s interest with a fast moving, interesting story about the American Revolution. It helped prepare us for our time on vacation and so much more. So very good!

Great history!

Wonderful history lesson with added mystery! Perfect for history buffs and historical fiction fans. Recommend to all DAR members. Nice to have a story from a female perspective.
