Solid series start for a young adult read

I may be biased, but for a young adult read, I have thoroughly enjoyed it over and over. It felt in the same spirit as The Chronicles of Narnia and other such series.

The characters find themselves progressing through situations together while changes in their personalities develop and some persist. I could relate to them, for better or worse, in various ways. The adventure changes in environment, action sequences, and plot twists kept me interested.

This book stands complete on its own, but I'm interested now in how developments in the last part of the book will carry forward in the series.
