About this listen

From Danielle Paige, the New York Times best-selling author of Dorothy Must Die, comes a reimagining of "The Snow Queen" fairy tale.

Seventeen-year-old Snow has spent the majority of her life within the walls of the Whittaker Institute, a high-security mental hospital in upstate New York. Deep down she knows she's not crazy and doesn't belong there. When she meets a mysterious, handsome new orderly and dreams about a strange twisted tree, she realizes she must escape and figure out who she really is.

Using her trusting friend, Bale, as a distraction, Snow breaks free and races into the nearby woods. Suddenly everything isn't what it seems, the line between reality and fantasy begins to blur, and she finds herself in icy Algid - her true home - with witches, thieves, and a strangely alluring boy named Kai, none of whom she's sure she can trust. As secret after secret is revealed, Snow discovers that she is on the run from a royal lineage she's destined to inherit, a father more powerful and ruthless than she could have imagined, and choices of the heart that could change the fate of everything...including Snow's return to the world she once knew.

This breathtaking first volume begins the story of how Snow becomes a villain, a queen, and ultimately a hero.

Critic reviews

"A lush and addictive fantasy woven from threads of magic, romance, and adventure by a master storyteller. Danielle Paige raises the bar with Stealing Snow." (Kami Garcia, New York Times best-selling coauthor of Beautiful Creatures and author of The Lovely Reckless)

Though the story is Awesome, just like Dorothy Must Die series, I feel the reader has something left to be desired. Many of the voice sound the same : Fathom / Howl and Margo sounded as one character. Too Bad, but I can also see much of Amy Gump in this character too, not a bad thing, just a recognition of the similarities.

Snow is melting with this Narrator

I just kept waiting for something to happen that made sense. One of the main characters actually only shows up at the beginning and the end. Disappointing. Forced myself to finish the book. So sad to see you have to WAIT for a sequel to hear what happens. Won't read it if there is one. Narrator did a great job.

I really loved the story but felt that it could have had more depth. I would suggest this for a young adult or teen.

Entertaining but predictable

I am usually a big fan of the genre, but I could not handle how horrible the narration is. Far too nasally, if you want to give it a try definitely listen to the sample first.

I like the story but the narrator needs to be little bit more lively her voice can put you to sleep.

Great story

I read this book because I really liked the Dorothy Must Die series and was hoping for something of equal quality. This fell short.

The biggest problem I had with the story was what source material the author was trying to use. There are two fairy tales—the ice queen, which was the very loose inspiration for Frozen, and Snow White. While both stories have a lot in common (i.e. the strong presence of a mirror), they are two different stories. It was as if the author read both of these stories, somehow combined them into a new third story, and from that material crafted this new mythology by selecting elements from both.

I really liked the premise of the book that a snow princess had somehow been stolen away from fairy tale land to wind up in an insane asylum and her adventure of finding her way back, but the execution was lacking.

Disappointing

I generally disliked the book from the first few lines and was marveling at the simplicity and stupidity that is the story. I felt the story to be generic and lackluster. I was barely listening later on as it wasn't very much interesting near the end. It was predictable and dull. I felt each of the characters was barely developed and unrelatable.

Not that good
