About this listen
The seventh book of this dark urban fantasy series follows necromancer Eric Carter through a world of vengeful gods and goddesses, mysterious murders, and restless ghosts.
Family is murder.
When Eric Carter helps a friend with a deadly ritual that could determine the fate of the most powerful mage family in Los Angeles he steps into the middle of centuries-long feuds with people who make the Borgias look like the Brady Bunch.
Eric's just fine with the murder, soul eaters, and death magic. He's just having trouble adjusting to being brought back from the grave.
If he's not careful, somebody's going to put him right back.

Story
Necromancer is such an ugly word, but it's a title Eric Carter is stuck with. He sees ghosts, talks to the dead. He's turned it into a lucrative career putting troublesome spirits to rest, sometimes taking on even more dangerous things. For a fee, of course. When he left LA fifteen years ago, he thought he'd never go back. Too many bad memories. Too many people trying to kill him. But now his sister's been brutally murdered and Carter wants to find out why.

Taylor is the name, John Taylor. My card says I'm a detective, but what I really am is an expert on finding lost things. It's part of the gift I was born with as a child of the Nightside. I left there a long time ago, with my skin and sanity barely intact. Now I make my living in the sunlit streets of London. But business has been slow lately, so when Joanna Barrett showed up at my door, reeking of wealth, asking me to find her runaway teenage daughter, I didn't say no.

Story
When Ray Lilly was 13 years old, a handgun accident landed his best friend, Jon Burrows, in a wheelchair and turned Ray into a runaway and petty criminal. Fifteen years later, Ray returns home after a stint in prison; he's determined to go straight, but he knows he can't do that without making peace with his old friend. What Ray doesn't expect is that Jon has just received a mysterious cure - not only is he out of his wheelchair, he seems stronger and faster than...well, pretty much anyone.

Story
A hulked-out wrath demon who eats gamer rage and loves cats, a shapeshifting lust demon who enjoys their food a bit too much, and a void demon who doesn’t see the point of any of this. They’re not the sort of mercenaries you'd hire on purpose, but Bex wouldn’t trust her life to anyone else. Ever since the ancient Mesopotamian king Gilgamesh decided death wasn’t for him, killed the gods, and conquered the afterlife, times have been rough for a free demon.

The children under Miss West's care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world.

Story
Alex Verus is part of a world hidden in plain sight, running a magic shop in London. And while Alex's own powers aren't as showy as some mages, he does have the advantage of foreseeing the possible future-allowing him to pull off operations that have a million-to-one-chance of success. But when Alex is approached by multiple factions to crack open a relic from a long-ago mage war, he knows that whatever's inside must be beyond powerful.

Story
In 525 BC, the Persian king Cambyses sent 50,000 soldiers across the conquered Egyptian desert to take an oasis city not far from where the Libyan border stands today. According to Greek history, a hurricane-force sandstorm struck near the end of their 600-mile trek. The army - all 50,000 men - vanished without a single trace. Fast forward to 1986. A British archaeological team, sent to the edge of the Great Sand Sea to exhume evidence of the incident, has also gone missing.

Another great entry in the series
I love how relatable Eric is. It’s like he’s this hardcore necromancer/mage but his internal monologue is just as self deprecating as my own. The whole story universe is so engaging and Rudy Sanda does a wonderful job voicing all the characters and making go them distinct.
If you like The Dresden Files you will like Eric Carter. He’s like the R rated version of Dresden. So if you are offended by gore or swearing it’s probably not for you.
Last thing; the author does a great job of using correct pronouns. There is a character who is gender fluid and everyone uses the appropriate pronouns in the dialogue. It’s what makes it so noticeable.

WTH is with Gabriella’s thick accent?
Love this next book in the series but why did this narrator voice Gabriella like that? She’s supposed to be a USC graduate who was a sorority girl implying she’s been in the US for most of her life but she sounds like she just learned English and has a thick accent. Very off-putting.
