About this listen

On August 21, 2017, more than 10 million Americans will experience an awe-inspiring phenomenon: the first total eclipse of the sun in America in almost 40 years. In Sun Moon Earth, astronomer Tyler Nordgren illustrates how this most seemingly unnatural of natural phenomena was transformed from a fearsome omen to a tourist attraction. From the astrologers of ancient China and Babylon to the high priests of the Maya, Sun Moon Earth takes us around the world to show how different cultures interpreted these dramatic events. Greek philosophers discovered eclipses' cause and used them to measure their world and the cosmos beyond. Victorian-era scientists mounted eclipse expeditions during the age of globe-spanning empires. And modern-day physicists continue to use eclipses to confirm Einstein's theory of relativity.

Sun Moon Earth is the ideal guide for all eclipse watchers and star gazers alike.

Timely Book

What did you like best about Sun Moon Earth? What did you like least?

This was a timely book I listened to on the way to see the eclipse. The history and story were excellent, but I felt that the narrator was rushing through the reading. It was actually a bit distracting that he was reading so quickly.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Tyler Nordgren?

Samuel West

Excited for 8/21/17!

This is a great read for anybody trying to decide whether it's worth all the trouble to find a place along the centerline for the Great American eclipse of 2017. Because of this well written and narrated overview of eclipses we, "The Dark Rangers" have decided to relocate our observatory's BIG telescopes to Grand Teton National Park for 8/21/17. Join us! But first use this book to read/hear all about the science, history, and mythology surrounding simple yet fascinating phenomena of our 3 most important words becoming collinear. Tyler reads the introduction a little fast and mechanically, but by the second chapter he falls into his famously captivating presentation voice. And at the conclusion, 4 hrs later, you wish there was still 4 more hours worth to listen to. Thank you Tyler Nordgren.

poor performance.

Interesting topic and good flow, but the performance was distractingly bad. Hard to hear at points, poor diction, and WAYYYY too fast. I had to slow it way down to understand.
