Publisher's summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Bono—artist, activist and the lead singer of Irish rock band U2—has written a memoir: honest and irreverent, intimate and profound, Surrender is the story of the remarkable life he’s lived, the challenges he’s faced and the friends and family who have shaped and sustained him.

Narrated by the author, Surrender is an intimate, immersive listening experience, telling stories from Bono’s early days in Dublin, to joining a band and playing sold out stadiums around the world with U2, plus his more than 20 years of activism.

Throughout a remarkable life, music has always been a constant for Bono and in the audiobook, his distinctive voice is interwoven with a very personal soundtrack adding atmosphere and texture to each and every scene. From moments of classic U2 hits to snippets by The Clash, Patti Smith, Verdi, Johnny Cash and Mozart, Surrender also exclusively features clips of newly recorded reimagined versions of U2 songs including ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’, ‘With Or Without You’, ‘One’, ‘Beautiful Day’ and more, glimpsed for the first time on Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story.

As one of the music world’s most iconic artists and the cofounder of organizations ONE and (RED), Bono’s career has been written about extensively. But in Surrender, it’s Bono who picks up the pen, writing for the first time about his remarkable life and those he has shared it with. In his unique voice, Bono takes us from his early days growing up in Dublin, including the sudden loss of his mother when he was 14, to U2’s unlikely journey to become one of the world’s most influential rock bands, to his more than 20 years of activism dedicated to the fight against AIDS and extreme poverty. Writing with candor, self-reflection, and humor, Bono opens the aperture on his life—and the family, friends and faith that have sustained, challenged and shaped him.

Surrender’s subtitle, '40 Songs, One Story,' is a nod to the book’s 40 chapters, which are each named after a U2 song.

Much more than a simple biography

Hearing him speak his words: priceless! Ego and humility coupled with very personal reflections as well as world view.

His way with words

I loved the editing. U2 and Bono always finds a way to adapt to the new. The uniqueness of an audiobook lies in the delivery of the words by the author’s voice and incorporating sounds that you don’t get by reading. Thanx for sharing your life story Bono! 🤘🏻

A must read for any U2 fan!!!

Bono has an unparalleled ability to tell stories, his way with words is sublime. To add to the fantastic narrative that details his uniquely full life of incredible experiences, his Irish accent is a delight to listen to! The book is also exceptionally well produced with snippets from songs and sound effects. One of the most engaging audiobooks I have ever had the pleasure of listening to!

An extraordinary Audiobook

Bono takes his extraordinary story and takes us on a theatrical tour of words and music.
As a piece of sound production, the audiobook is remarkable. He weaves the stories and the music together to take what is a good story and makes it great.
The whole is told with an endearing candour. The unfamiliar elements to the story, in particular about the campaign to get AIDS drugs to Africa make for gripping reading. Highly recommended.

Best peotic and honest Rock star Autobiography

Loved the beauty of the storytelling and the journey Bono takes us as he and U2 grow into one of the most memorable Rock bands that continues to inspire me to be a better version of myself. Thank Bono for the hope your songs gave a kid "coloured" kid in South Africa that is now heading towards his 50s still inspired by the music of U2 to Surrender to all life has for me.

Powerful and humble, a privilege to read.

Bono writes with humility, gratitude and generosity to all those who he has encountered throughout his remarkable journey and life. I am in awe and respect of how he and his inner circle have put their talents and energy into such remarkable humanitarian work, while continuing to be exceptional entertainers. From South Africa I thank you for the magnificent and largely unsung contribution you have made to this crazy, beautiful world of ours. Thank you.
