About this listen

In this stirring tale of survival set against the backdrop of the founding of Jamestown, young listeners are introduced to Samuel Collier, the page of famed Captain John Smith. A school perennial and favorite among educators since 2001.

In 1607, a year after the Virginia Company was granted a charter to establish a settlement in North America, 104 men set sail on a voyage to a new land. Among the brave adventurers who make the journey is a young boy named Samuel Collier, the page of famed Captain John Smith. Disease, famine, and continuing attacks by neighboring Algonquin Native Americans take a tremendous toll on the settlers. Samuel is one of the few to survive the harsh realities of the New World during the first few years of Jamestown.

My children very much enjoyed listening to this story . We learned of while visiting James Town and only wish we would have read it before. This story brings so much history to life and we all enjoyed it as a family . I highly recommend it for learning history through literature students .

A vivid story young ones can relate to.

We found this book at random and decided to listen to it as we study early American history. We are so happy that we did as we thoroughly enjoyed the story, as well as the narration. We were engaged the entire time. FYI: There were multiple times, when death and killing was discussed, but not in a gruesome way. I appreciate that the topic was not ignored as this was the reality. As a homeschooling mother, I would highly recommend this book. The story was masterfully written and the narrator is phenomenal.
