Systematic Theology for Beginners: A Comprehensive Introduction to Christian Doctrine

I figured since this book has no reviews That I’d read it with the intention of reviewing it. As I’m familiar with theology but haven’t read a systematic theology before, and I’ll be a first year seminary student this fall. This books seems to be written at an 8th grade level so it should be understandable for almost anyone, but if you’re familiar with Theology already, you’ll probably get bored. I also should mention this book leans politically American left and I politically right, but to remember that Christ is more important than politics, which this book achieves. I’m rating it a 4 as it contains multiple errors or confusing points that shouldn’t be in a book like this, like I couldn’t give this book to my Youth group without explaining stuff I shouldn’t need to explain (besides just secondary theological differences) . But it was generally a good easy read.

In the introduction Rodney Langley introduces systematic theology explaining it’s value to the believer, Church, and wider world.
(tangent) with an emphasis on spiritual growth and development of doctrine that makes me slightly uncomfortable but and produces a slight error in holding a materialistic worldview over one that holds the reality of our God as objectively true. Claiming that monotheism was a development (materialistic) rater than a revelation (Christian), or that was my interpretation. Otherwise, pretty solid.
Revelation and Scripture:
Rodney explains how God reveals Himself to people, what scripture is, and why it’s important to Christians
The Nature of God:
Rodney explains God’s attributes including The Trinity, All-Powerful (Yes! God has the power to perform miracles!), All-Knowing, Present Everywhere (Should have added explained the Creator-Creation distinction here, especially with the prevalence of pantheism in the modern day(pantheism says that God is everything, rather than present everywhere)), unable to change, and His Love & Justice
Creation:
Rodney explains how God created the universe including the 6 day creation, mentioned Sabbath significance of this narrative, Humans as image bearers, created out of nothing, God’s provision and providence, Rodney explains how science & faith are compatible (not YEC) and says that they both science and faith strengthen each other. Also encourages us to Biblical environmental stewardship
Humanity:
Rodney explains Humans which have minds, bodies, and spirits. The fall of man, original sin, Armenian free will (ability to choose God), Human nature, What it means to be Human from a Biblical perspective, redemption,
Christology: Who Jesus is
Rodney explains who Jesus who is fully human and fully divine through the following topics, incarnation, Hypostatic Union, work of Christ for His mission, different atonement theories, ascension & intercession
The Holy Spirit
Rodney explains who the Holy Spirit is. He Sanctifies us and gives us power, Shows Him in the OT and NT, Gifts of the Spirit (continuationist), Fruits of the Spirit, Baptism of the Holy Spirit (Pentecostal but not IPE), Holy Spirit in the Church and believer,
Soteriology: Nature of Salvation
Rodney explains the nature of salvation as a redemption of us in the present and future promise. grace & faith, justification (unearned decoration of righteousness), sanctification, our adoption, glorification (after we die), and preservation of the saints
Ecclesiology: Definition of the Church
Rodney explains the Body of the Church, as a community of believers, a family, Jesus’s bride, with a mission and purpose, not just an institution, but also explains the organization, and sacraments.
Eschatology: The Future!
Rodney explains prophecies, the second coming, resurrection of the dead and final judgment, Heaven & a strong perspective of Hell, and New Creation
Angels & Demons: Spiritual beings
Rodney explains what angels and demons are, angels being for God and for people, and demons being against God and all people with prime leader of Satan who is defeated. He explains spiritual warfare, shows angels in the Bible, and contemporary beliefs about angels (I would have cut this portion out as it is confusing at best it or offer some more concrete push back against the un-Biblical concepts mentioned in this portion like Spirit Guides, meditation, or praying to angels)
Ethics in Theology: Shapes our views of right and wrong from a Biblical Perspective.
Rodney explains Christian virtues, decision making, promotion of equality and fairness and compassion for the downtrodden (Uses the loaded term social justice), bioethics life begins at conception and is a gift from God, sexual ethics (gift from God set aside for Biblical marriage), and environmental ethics
Church History: Explains the basic history of the Church
Rodney explains the following: early Church, medieval Church, the reformation, modern Church movements, global Christianity, key theological developments, and future of the Church.
Practical Theology:
Rodney explains worship & liturgy, preaching & teaching, Pastoral care, evangelism & mission, discipleship, Christian education, and community & fellowship
I figure I should mention that this book is written from a Church of God perspective and I’m coming from an Assemblies of God perspective, but I’ll try to rate and explain it as objectively as possible with our theological differences in mind, and remembering it’s for the beginner and the glory of our God.
