About this listen

While artist Julie Schachter has received national and international attention for her pinhole photography (see RESUME, back pages/Preview) few are aware that she has also created a large body of paintings, drawings, and sculptures that cover the creative spectrum. Her artworks presented here are infused with wit and humor, and the highest level of craft, while addressing the major issues of the old and new Millennium.

To attain a fuller understanding of her approach to conceptual subject matter, her lens- less pinhole camerawork offers some important clues. Her photographic work, which includes B&W time exposures shot in the San Francisco/Bay Area, Death Valley and beyond, may be viewed in her 2013 pinhole book, BLACK BOXES. She has also created a extensive photographic survey of the West Coast punk scene, in a book entitled, SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA PUNK/NEW WAVE 1978-1980, that includes an historical record of bands such as Tuxedomoon, The Mutants, Crispy Baby, Seizure, Flipper, The Nuns, The Sex Pistols and many others. In the world of art there are many 'undiscovered' artists, those who deserve a wider audience for their efforts. Please enjoy the variety and originality of works exhibited here.

“Julie Schachter’s art is provocative, displaying her talent and craft disguised as a personal inquiry into the icons of modern life. As you view her wide range of work more closely it becomes apparent the need to put aside your first assumptions of what you are seeing, to allow for her deeper inquiry to present itself. Julie's art is an elegant exploration of the mundane and profane leading us to a more profound appreciation of the mysterious world we inhabit.
The "Misaligned World '' artwork is another example of Schachter's wizardry. Concept, design and mastery of the craft brings the viewer to ponder the icons of animal life left behind, as man-made teacups drift off into the unknown taking the earth with them. The painting becomes a commentary on the human condition and how unaware we are of the magnificence of the physical world which we have inherited and how willing we are to let it disappear. Bravo!
