Editorial reviews

Narrator Scott Pollak's guy-next-door delivery will make listeners feel like they're hanging out with a good friend after a game, trading stories of the oddballs that have populated the Phillies. It's been said that in the 1990s, while other teams led the league in players with character, the Phillies led the circuit in characters. Phillies historian Rich Westcott does not disappoint, sharing some of the funniest and most tragic stories from this team's 120-year history.

Although the Phillies have suffered indignities like no other team, like losing 23 games in a row, Pollak manages to inject a rueful, self-effacing positivity into these anecdotes - a mixture of emotions that Phillies fans will surely find familiar and appreciate.

Great Stories...Bad Narrator

Any additional comments?

I love hearing about the Phillies, but as a local guy, it became very distracting when the narrator mis-pronounced player names and Philly locales.

Enjoyable for the average Phillies fan

Overall the book was pretty good. Definitely enjoyed the early history of the Phillies the most, wish he would have gone into greater detail about the present day Phillies, didn't have many stories for the present day Phillies either. Not the greatest written book, structure wise, that I've ever read or listened to, but was entertaining enough to listen to on the way to and from work. Would definitely recommend if you're looking a book as a Phillies fan, but it's not going to be something you tell people is a must read, or in this case listen. Also, didn't care for the author's obvious bias on certain baseball traditions, such as the All Star game.

Mispronounciatios Galore

I believe the speaker for this audible book speaks very distinctly, however his mispronounced names of names and cities take away from the overall quality, making it difficult to follow.

Reliving my childhood memories

I grew up listening to the Phillies on 1210AM out of Philadelphia. Mike Schmidt and Steve Carlton were my favorite players. Harry Kalas was the absolute best announcer I ever listened to . Ashburn was a great sidekick. I really enjoyed reliving my childhood memories with some Philly stories I had not heard.
