About this listen

Under the October moon, New Englanders gather at church suppers, harvest festivals, and apple pressings. As the day's light wanes, they listen to stories and prepare themselves for the mysteries of winter. The four original stories on this highly praised recording were inspired by an October moon in New England. They are told by a seasoned storyteller and enhanced by sound effects and haunting intsrumental music.©1992 Marc Joel Levitt (P)1992 August House Publishers, Inc. Classics Scary Scary Stories

Editorial reviews

Levitt is both creator and performer in this collection of spooky New England tales. His style is distinctive, his voice clear and well-modulated, his characters fully voiced. Eerie sound effects and music are used extensively and appropriately. A feature of Levitt's style is a consistently slow pace and extensive repetition of both phrases and events. While at times these work to good effect, at other times they slow the story's pace and diminish excitement. The publisher's recommendation of an audience of nine and up is right on the mark as none of the stories are excessively gruesome or frightening.

"A welcome and eerie escape. Listeners will be entertained not only by this master storyteller but by the quality of the accompanying sound effects." (School Library Journal)

Stories for Autumn

My son and I really enjoy this particular audio book. We are both big fans of Halloween and the entire autumnal season and this has become a perinnial favorite. The writing is magical and the narration is crisp and transporting. Not to scary for younger children, yet not to "babyish" for the older ones. This is perfect for keeping the children occupied in the car while running errends.

Beloved for over 20 years!

I first borrowed this as a cassette from our local library in the early nineties as a little kid, and the tails in this book enthralled me. Over two decades later, I woke up one morning and thought of The Purple Bishop, logged onto Audible and here was the book. The tails are as wonderful as ever. The stories are clean so kids can enjoy them, and should be entertaining for both kids and adults. The author also does a spectacular job of narrating. I couldn't possibly recommend this audiobook enough!

Short seasonal Treat

Well narrated short tales with a good amount of spooky. Good for a family listen with parental guidance. Definitely enjoyable without the children too.
