About this listen

Tears in My Gumbo: The Caregiver's Recipe for Resilience is a heartfelt manuscript that speaks personally and passionately to the 44 million caregivers caught up in the silver tsunami sweeping this country and for all of the people who care about the caregivers.

The book inspires and supports caregivers as well as the family unit involved in the loved one's care. Through a series of caregiver stories, the book illustrates the ingredients needed for caregivers to maintain resilience and create a soul-nurturing gumbo of care.

Artfully written by caregiver coach and consultant Nadine Roberts Cornish, CSA, the book shares her personal experience as a caregiver for her mother, which transformed her life; she became a care consultant, a care manager, and a caregiver coach. A native of New Orleans, Nadine shares her rich family heritage simmered in the traditions of gumbo preparation, steeped in love and community, seasoned with wisdom, humor, and healing, much like a heaping bowl of Louisiana seafood gumbo. Each story teaches a different lesson demonstrating varying degrees of knowhow and courage. This book is ultimately about healing.

Excellent book for a wide range of listeners.

Any additional comments?

This book would be good for families, caregivers, volunteers and really anyone who wants to understand caregiving and the difficulties and grief that follows. I love the message and how it is delivered. The author makes her points in an easy and understandable way. I would absolutely recommend this book to everyone. I will be telling my hospice volunteer coordinator about this book immediately and researching to see if this book is in hard copy for the hospice library.

I loved this book.

Simply wonderful!

I loved this book from start to finish. The stories were beautifully told, from Nadine's clients to her personal experience with her mother and grandmother.

Although this book was written in regards to adult caregivers; I've found many uses to where I can apply this to my daily use in caring for children 0-5 and working with their parents.

This is most definitely a book that I will be recommending and reading again :)

Incredibly Compassionate

Before I listened to this incredibly compassionate explanation of the complicated process of caregiving, I had only a sketchy understanding of what was involved. Now, after hearing the authors heartfelt telling of her own story of caregiving and of how her own work as a consultant to other caregivers evolved, my own understanding is much deeper. Her work glows with respect and compassion for everyone involved in the process.

I highly recommend this book both to caregivers, especially those new to the process, and to anyone who needs to support those caregivers in any way.

Beautiful and Important - A Must Listen

Tears in My Gumbo was such a great listen. I love the way the author, Nadine Roberts Cornish wrote this like a recipe book. It IS in fact a recipe book for caregivers as well as care receivers. This book is full of amazing stories but also invaluable information.

There were different stories each with unique situations with helpful tips on ways to handle them. Truly priceless. I can't even recommend this audiobook enough to anyone, especially caregivers. I liked the chapter on advocacy. This is something that is so important.

The author's own story was moving and thoughtful. I love that she was her own narrator. She has a fabulous upbeat voice. She was positive and warm and I'm glad I had the opportunity to listen. This book is a gem.
