About this listen

From the lightly-scented pen of Scott Telek, whose writing has been celebrated on seventeen continents, comes another hilarious and insightful look at horror movies brilliant, good, good-bad, bad, bad-good, and just plain godawful. You will laugh, gasp, convulse, grind, harumph and gesticulate as you read Telek’s straight-talk reviews that look past the supposed quality of the films under discussion to break down the more salient question: Is it worth watching?

Here we have 36 movie reviews of films beginning with either the letters H or I. This includes the Halloween series, the Hostel series, and horror films beginning with I, like I Saw the Devil, I Eat Your Skin and I Spit on Your Grave.

As usual, there are a mix of legitimately good films, like Halloween, The Haunting (1963) and I Walked with a Zombie, and trashy films that are good fun, like the Incredible Melting Man, Halloween III: Season of the Witch and It’s Alive. There are films that were intended to be good but are godawful stinkers, like Neil Jordan’s execrable In Dreams, and hilariously awful dreck like Hell of the Living Dead, which seems to be at least a third composed of unrelated stock footage.

This one is a fairly strong collection in that either the films are good and worth exploring, and they also inspired some long, funny, detailed and meticulous reviews. You have some fun watching ahead of you if you pursue some of the films included here—and reading Telek’s energetic and laugh-out-loud funny comments on where everything went wrong. Take the plunge and load your synapses up with movie reviews as fun, or more, than watching the films themselves.
