Istanbul, i dag: Den iranske historieprofessor Behrouz Sharafi bliver stoppet på gaden af en mand, der ved alt om Sharafis forskning og hans fund af et gammelt brev. Det bliver begyndelsen på et mareridt.
Vatikanstaten, 2 måneder senere: FBI-agenten Sean Reilly er sammen med professor Sharafi på vej til et møde i Vatikanet. Han har desperat brug for hjælp. En ukendt iransk mand har tvunget ham til at tage sig af Sharafi. Hvis han ikke gør, som beordret, vil Tess Chaykin dø. Og så går jagten i gang.
