About this listen

Hitting rock bottom is just the beginning....

At 24, Finnegan Hart has already achieved what most people do in a lifetime. He’s a best-selling author who lives in the heart of London, drives his dream sports car and attends the most exclusive parties. But appearances are deceiving.

Once the spotlight fades, Finn is left alone with his overactive mind, alcohol and drugs the only way to quiet the noise.

Until an overdose nearly kills him and drags everyone he loves down with him.

Desperate to escape London’s toxic influence, Finn moves to Ten Mile Bottom - a small town in the outskirts of Cambridge - to try and put his life back together.

The last thing he expects is to fall in love.

Ben Goodwin is everything Finn isn’t - kind, empathetic and drop-dead gorgeous. He’s everything Finn needs.

Afraid to drag Ben into his messy life, Finn tries to resist their attraction. But when Finn finally shows Ben the darkest corners of his soul, will love be enough to make Ben stay?

Somber story

This is a difficult story to rate. On one hand, it's written well and has characters you feel like you can understand even if you haven't experienced their troubles. On the other, it's entirely somber and cheerless. That grey cloud stays over your head the entire time, and at the end you only get a tiny peek at sunlight. No rainbows for this couple.

The author includes a note about it being somewhat autobiographical, so it's clearly written as a catharsis, but not one I'm sure I'd want to read without knowing the author on a personal level (which I don't.) I have other stories by the author which I will try, but if they are in the same tone I would say this is not the author for me.

This was my first time listening to Christopher Weeks as narrator, and I thought he did fantastic! I'll definitely be looking for more of his work.

Good Book!!

I really enjoyed this book it’s different than most of the romance books I listen to but I was caught up in Finn’s world from the beginning to end.

Loved it.

Ten Mile Bottom is told from the perspective of Fin. A best seller author who is addicted to drugs and alcohol. After ODing in a club he's faced with some hard truths and moves to Ten Mile Bottom to try and get a foothold on his life and keep busy with his new house so he doesn't turn back to drugs. He still struggles with his addiction. He meets Ben, a shy but adorable mechanic after having some car trouble.

The following is my reactions during different parts of this book. I received this audiobook in exchange for a honest review.

Into the second chapter of this book and I'm already sucked in. Narrator is amazing.

Chapter 8. I'm adoring Fin's BFF Aiden. Fin though is a bit of a prick. But after learning about a devastating tragedy (or 2) that was loosely connected to the OD Fin had (OD happened in the first few chapters so I don't feel this is a spoiler) you can tell he's trying not to be such a prick and is attempting to find his footing on life in a small town, Ten Mile Bottom, away from everything and everyone he's use to and stick to his sobriety. I have a feeling I'm going to fall in love with Ben though. Also hoping to see more of Fin's neighbors.

Chapter 12. Literally too caught up in Fin that I just realized this is more of a slow burn book. He's becoming more of a lovable prick. I want this book not to end. Also there are more of the neighbors. 😃

Chapter- I'm not telling anymore.

🥺 my heart.

I want to stab this female character. I love a good balance of family drama though.

Okay at this point I feel like saying anymore will ruin the book. But I love this book and the word from the author at the end was heart warming.

I would have loved too have seen more of Rose and know more about her family drama but really that's all I felt I missed. The narrator did such a great job with Ben's mom's voice. All the voices really but her's seemed more complicated to do. Most of the love scene are sweet and meaningful but there's a few rough and hard in there.

10/10 would recommend.

Good story

I’m a sucker for a story about human growth. I was hesitant to listen to this because of the angst involved with Finn being an addict, and I’m currently one month into the quarantine (COVID-19), but I don’t regret listening to it. I enjoyed the narrator’s accent, as well.

Loved the book and the audio is just as good!

This was my first time listening to Christopher Meeks, but I hope it won't be the last. He brought just the right tone to this emotional, heartfelt story.

Love in Ten Mile Bottom

Finn is falling apart. Drugs and alcohol are destroying him. After a close call he decides to get a fresh start in Ten Mile Bottom. Finn is grumpy and standoffish and I kind of loved him. Ben is a super sweet mechanic and perfect for Finn. I also really liked Finn's friend Aiden who I hope is getting his own story. Seems like he gives everything to Finn and I'd like to see him get a HEA of his own. This is a sweet story of Finn finding himself and falling for Ben. It is told entirely from Finns POV, sometimes I wanted to know what Ben was thinking, but it works well for this story. Narrator was new to me and I thought he did well.

I didn’t really connect with this

I really did want to like this book because I don’t want to invalidate any of the author’s feeling or experiences on which she based parts of this book.
However, as sorry as I am to say this, I just didn’t feel a connection to the characters of this book. I think it may be because I’ve never really struggled with much of what our main characters have: addiction, toxic family relationships, coming out, telling my parents I want to go to college instead of working for a family business, etc. I have a wonderful family and it was just expected I would go to college (and I did). I suppose I feel the pressure of expectations like Finn does with the recent lull in his writing, although for different reasons. I can definitely relate with the struggles of having a touchy little jerk of a German car, though!

I also didn’t like how Finn seemed oblivious about the fact that his best friend was in love with him for so long and then I feel like he was a bit callous about it.

I know that making a choice to stay sober and move away from toxic influences is big, but other than that, not much happens. It was an insta-love romance with no real conflicts, which made it a bit boring.

The narration was good, though!

The book is exceptionaly sweet for a story startin

My first Teodora Kostova book, and if that's what I have to expect, it surely will not be my last.
Every character in this book has a ton of personal issues, not only the MCs Finn (whose POV we get the story from) and Ben, but each side characters have theirs. And the author does a really good job exploring them; even so the book has this sort of sweet, if a bit somber mood, that drew me in and complitely hooked me.
Christopher Weeks is a new to me narrator, I think he really was the right fit for ben and for the tone of this story.

Deeply moving

A wonderful, perfectly crafted story about a man who, after a very close call, must confront the darkness inside him that almost took his life. He decides to do so in a small town close to Cambridge without having a clue that that decision would change his whole life.

This is, at its core, a very powerful, hopeful story. The way in which Finn finds himself embraced for the people in town bewilders him, but it's also strangely comforting. And we can see how, slowly, he begins to work his issues. He loves his friend Aiden, but he also uses him as a crutch: a safe relationship that doesn't require for him to change. Until it does. Letting Aiden go shows how far Finn has go.

His relationship with his mother is toxic and the root of his addiction, and yes, his decision about her is also an adult, grown-up one, and another proof that he is doing a lot better.

And Ben! Ben is sweet but not naive. He understands Finn, and it's at his side all the way. Their romance advance slowly, but in a steady way, and they support each other. Real and lovely ♥

An excellent story!

Christopher Weeks does a truly great job with the narration.
