About this listen

A thrilling adventure set in the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean during the early 20th century.

Set against the backdrop of tumultuous seas, Terror at Sea is a harrowing tale of survival and heroism. The story begins with the San Martin, captained by Antonio Perez, journeying from Realejo to Tahiti. Among the five passengers are Mr. McKay, his son Andy, Terence Donaghue, Fanshaw Ellerton, and Quexo, a young ranch worker. The group finds themselves aboard the aging steamer due to Mr. McKay’s injury during a Central American revolution.

As the steamer plods along, it falls into a fierce storm, causing significant damage and eventually leaving the San Martin stranded on a coral reef near a seemingly deserted island. The group makes a daring escape to the nearby land, contending with treacherous currents and sharks. Once ashore, they set up camp, scavenging supplies and exploring their new environment. They discover that the island, though initially welcoming, holds many dangers, including an ominous treasure and hostile native tribes.

The tension heightens when the natives attack, forcing the group to defend their makeshift shelter using limited resources. Their besieged state becomes desperate as they battle waves of attackers intent on claiming their lives and the treasure hidden within the island. The climactic battle sees Mr. McKay, the boys, and their companions displaying incredible bravery. The group fights off the savages with makeshift defenses, scavenged weapons, and sheer willpower, although Quexo is tragically killed.

Throughout their ordeal, they cling to hope for rescue. This hope finally materializes with the arrival of H.M.S. Blazer, a British cruiser, whose commander, alerted by a French trader’s report, rushes to their aid. The Blazer’s timely intervention scatters the native attackers and rescues the weary survivors. They are then secured on the ship, along with the treasure they uncovered.

The narrative concludes with the castaways safely aboard the Blazer, finally able to leave the island behind them. Mr. McKay and the boys, having survived their trial by fire, reflect on their harrowing experience and the lives saved and lost. The island, with its secrets and dangers, disappears beyond the horizon as they head towards Sydney, leaving the drama and terror at sea behind.
