About this listen

The Pulitzer Prize-winning author on the value of creative writing, American Democracy, and science.

This essay comes from the NPR series This I Believe, which features brief personal reflections from both famous and unknown Americans. The pieces that make up the series compel listeners to rethink not only what and how they have arrived at their beliefs, but also the extent to which they share them with others.

Narration: botched, labored, uninspiring, unconvincing reading of canned politically correct appreciation of science equally as much as religion.

Content: unnecessarily complicatedly expressed belief that both science and religion are important.

Don't bother listening to this one unless you want to hear an affected, self-important, obfuscating explanation of a simple idea. We're I still teaching I would have students read this essay as an example of how not to write.

Turgidly written personal philosophy.
