About this listen

Fresh from his trip to Britain, Falco needs to re-establish his presence in Rome. A minor role in the trial of a senator entangles him in the machinations of Silius Italicus and Paccius Africanus, two real-life lawyers at the top of their trade. These notorious ex-consuls play a dangerous game, where success brings rich pickings but a mistrial or a wrong verdict entails huge financial penalties. The senator is convicted but then dies, apparently by suicide. However, Silius hires Falco and his young associates to prove it was murder.©2003 Lindsey Davis (P)2014 Audible, Inc. An Imperial Treasure

You can't go wrong with Falco. He wants to be a ruthless hard case but his tender heart won't let him....his tender heart and Helena, the love of his life! This case shows a more intellectual side to Falco. As usual he is bruised, but Falco also wins some kind of victory in the end. Jamie Glover does a fine job with the narration.

The best narrator for this series

I really liked the narrator - he had just the right nuances for the many voices. I don’t mind Christian Rodska but dislike Gordon Griffin who makes Falco come across as a wheedling creep. I would be great if the Falco stories recorded by him could be redone by this narrator.

Love this series

Falco et al, have developed since the start of this series. Mystery and humor are always there. Even though different narrator Jamie Glover did a fine job. Falco his wife Helena and the rest of the crew have developed since start of series. Davis always keeps you guessing. Love this series.

Not the best of Falco

I don't care much for Jamie Glover - there are better narrators in the series. My particular favorite is Christian Rodska. This particular book got tied up in the legal intricasies of Roman Law. It was really an inheritance case and all the scam the lawyer do to exact more money from clients and estates -- sort of the Roman Version of Jarndyce and Jarndyce. None of the characters are particular appealing and I felt the book dragged on way longer than was necessary. The author really padded it out and there was little meat in it. There really was not any suspense or mystery in this book. Basically I was prettty disapointed in the title and was bored with the book. If you are Falco devotee then you will marginally enjoy it. It you are just getting started with Falco go for Silver Pigs - more exciting -- or Three Hands in a Fountain.

Courtroom drama, what fun!

I love this series. This time we have some courtroom drama in addition to the usual whodunnit, and it was great, especially because I got a tutorial on jury selection and judge selection. It is evident that Davis did some serious research, as she always does, and then finds a great way to educate us while entertaining us. The narrator for the episodes in this series keeps changing. Glover was fine, but there have been better.

Law and order - Roman style

Continues to build on previous characters. Gives an interesting look at the Roma legal system in a humorous vein. Good detective story - followers of this series will not be disappointed.

Love this series!

I have read and re-read the books, and now am having fun listening to them on audio. Great narration! These novels have a little bit of something for everyone- they're good mysteries, they're an interesting look at the Roman Empire, and the main character is funny. Smart, but also light and entertaining. So far there has only been one book in the series I haven't absolutely loved.

A good listen

My first audiobook in this entertaining series of books. Loved the story but felt the narration let it down, narrator could have put more effort into using different voices for the various characters.

Amusing

As always Falco is amusing and entertaining but not much action or mystery. Figured out the secret half way through.
