About this listen
In which Sir Arthur Conan Doyle hires Mr Sherlock Holmes to investigate crop circles, and Dr Watson demonstrates to Mr Holmes the usefulness of astronomy.
©1995 Vonda N. McIntyre (P)2013 Audible, Inc.Editorial reviews
Vonda N. McIntyre's deftly woven web of sci-fi, mystery, romance, and history, finds English author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle visited by his own fictional characters, the eponymous Sherlock Holmes and sidekick John Watson, who attempt to crack the case of the crop circles in Doyle's Surrey gardens. Striking a distinctly Victorian cadence, actor Simon Brooks capably adapts himself to McIntyre's unique language - itself a convincing send-up of Doyle's own literary voice - and imbues the testy relationship between real-life author and fictional hero with authentic role-playing. Indeed, Holmes and his creator stand in stark contrast: Doyle - a highly impressionable disciple of supernaturalism, very much lacking the keen deductive powers of his popular detective - is the subject of scornful derision from the slick and savvy sleuth.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I was looking for a short story to finish off a long drive and this was perfect. I loved the reader, he has a great voice and flowed beautifully in and out of different accents. The story was intriguing, with witty dialogue which had me laughing out loud quite a few times. It was fun.Excellent short story
