About this listen

Steely. Seasoned. Smart-alecky. The storied San Francisco snooper is back!

Share the exciting exploits of Dashiell Hammett's famous gumshoe through this thrilling 6-hour collection. Featuring all of the episodes from both our Volume One and Volume Two collections, Howard Duff and Steve Dunne star as Sam Spade in 12 madcap capers from 1946 - 1951. As crass as he is charismatic, this dynamic detective attracts a curious clientele - gentlemen who tend to drop dead and ladies who are drop-dead gorgeous. Each case leads our wise-cracking detective to the danger of the dark alley - and leads you to discover the timeless appeal of this hard-boiled hero. But, fair warning... a knock on Spade's door can mean wild goose chases, scams, and set ups of the seriously deadly variety.

Once again, these digitally restored and remastered episodes are available from the Radio Spirits Archives Collection - featuring re-releases of our most popular discontinued collections.

What did you love best about The Adventures of Sam Spade, Detective: Volumes One & Two?

When Howard Duff was Sam Spade, the performance was 5-star. Sadly, the producers were frightened by the McCarthy "there's a commie under every bed" scare, and fired him. His replacements, including Steve Dunne, were uniformly dreadful. One star at best.

What three words best describe Howard Duff and Steve Dunne ’s voice?

Duff -- debonaire, sexy, charming
Dunne -- not very good

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Sam Spade stories were not supposed to be moving; they were supposed to be charming and funny.

Any additional comments?

There are of course a few remnants of the 50s that have to be overlooked -- like the rampant sexism. Every woman is either a femme fatale, a devil in a sexy red dress, or an airhead. We are all supposed to love Sam's Secretary, who is in the airhead column. Hard to take these days.

Bring Back Howard Duff

A novel character for his time Mr. Spade became the mold for every detective that followed. The cool, dashing, tough, and smart private eye persona still strikes a cord today.

THE original hard boiled detective.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

multiple stories makes the hours fly by.

Any additional comments?

this plays out like old radio dramas because they are. what is kind of nice is that they kept the old commercials. i skipped one do to the ridiculously awful way the episode portrayed a native American chief who needed help. but over all a fun thing to listen to in the car.

Steve Dunne is no Howard Duff, but that doesn't mean he's no good at all. Save the Howard Duff episodes for last, but most of the Dunne episodes are lots of fun, too, with the always-superb Lurene Tuttle outdoing her splendid self to help take up Dunne's slack.

Lots of fun with Duff and Dunne

This is one of the best old time detective shows available. Sound sometimes fades in and out but overall the performances make up for any glitches in the recordings.

Great full cast drama with some laughs
