About this listen

Perhaps the best-loved 19th-century American novel, Mark Twain's tale of boyhood adventure overflows with comedy, warmth, and slapstick energy. It brings to life an array of irresistible characters - the awesomely self-confident Tom, his best buddy Huck Finn, indulgent Aunt Polly, and the lovely, beguiling Becky - as well as such unforgettable incidents as whitewashing a fence, swearing an oath in blood, and getting lost in a dark and labyrinthine cave.

Below Tom Sawyer's sunny surface lurk hints of a darker reality, of youthful innocence and naïveté confronting the cruelty, hypocrisy, and foolishness of the adult world - a theme that would become more pronounced in Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Despite such suggestions, Tom Sawyer remains Twain's joyful ode to the endless possibilities of childhood.

Editorial reviews

Tom's adventures continue to be engaging, funny, innocent, and insightful all at the same time, and are full of great characters living their nineteenth-century lives with all of America's confidence and wide-open possibilities. Dufris adopts a homey, meandering voice that doesn't match Twain's energy. He livens up a bit during dialogue scenes, but the character voices he uses for Tom and Huck don't have much depth.

Tom Sawyer brought to life!

What did you love best about The Adventures of Tom Sawyer?

This story of Mark Twain will remain a classic no matter my opinion. But the performance in this audiobook by William Dufris is extremely entertaining. He brings the characters of Tom, Huck, Aunt Polly and others to life through simply reading the words on the page - and it's done with the greatest of ease. Well worth listening to!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Tom - of course.

Which character – as performed by William Dufris – was your favorite?

The narration of Mark Twain himself.

Deserving of its reputation

Would you consider the audio edition of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer to be better than the print version?

Well, yeah, because I have a lot of trouble seeing to read!

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer?

When Becky turned her back on Tom Sawyer and everything to do with him

Any additional comments?

A fun romp. I had never read it before, although I heard all sorts of rumors about the book and the movie from early childhood. I always thought I should read the book, and when I did, I discovered that memories from rumors were incomplete and incorrect! Mark Twain was a wonderful spinner of tales that painted children as they actually were, as opposed to how people wanted to remember them! The two main children, Tom and Becky, as well as Huckleberry Finn, were well-rounded characters, as well as well-rounded PEOPLE.

Wonderful capture of a different era

Wonderful story of a childhood long gone. The portrayal of a boy growing up and the wonderful creativity and imagination engulfs you from the start. This is certainly a childhood that is remarkable but you certainly would not want your own child to partake. :) I believe very good for teenagers and older but may give too many "ideas" to adventurous boys still forming their own characters. Enjoyable none the less. Mark Twain is a master at literature and tongue in cheek humor!

Narration

Not. The narration sounds pretentious. The southern accent sounds fake.
