About this listen

Daryl Gregory's The Album of Dr. Moreau combines the science fiction premise of the famous novel by H. G. Wells with the panache of a classic murder mystery and the spectacle of a beloved boy band.

It’s 2001, and the WyldBoyZ are the world’s hottest boy band, and definitely the world’s only genetically engineered human-animal hybrid vocal group. When their producer, Dr. M, is found murdered in his hotel room, the “boyz” become the prime suspects. Was it Bobby the ocelot (“the cute one”), Matt the megabat (“the funny one”), Tim the pangolin (“the shy one”), Devin the bonobo (“the romantic one”), or Tusk the elephant (“the smart one”)? Las Vegas Detective Luce Delgado has only 24 hours to solve a case that goes all the way back to the secret science barge where the WyldBoyZ’ journey first began - a place they used to call home.

Boy band version with murder of a classic tale

Daryl Gregory’s The Album of Doctor Moreau is an interesting riff on the Wells’ classic. A hugely popular preteen boy band consisting of what appears to be creatures coming from some ‘mysterious island.’ The murder of their manager puts all of them under the scrutiny of the local constabulary where the lead detective has a daughter who is a huge fan. There are engaging conversations with each of the band members who each possess their own peccadillos.

Gregory appears to have fun with what almost feels like an assignment in a creative writing class. Each of the band members represent a different animal which were ‘uplifted’ in a never defined manner, although eventually allusions to a secret government program are raised. Each band member displays attributes associated with their entity of origin (bonobo – hypersexual or elephant – intelligence). The clues are gradually discovered that allows for the detective to ‘solve’ the case, but it all ends in a unique fashion.

The narration is excellent with solid character distinction. Pacing is smooth, making for a quick listen.

A great retelling

A great retelling of Dr Monroe especially with shining a light on the bad side of pop stardom

So much fun

So far I haven’t been disappointed with anything I’ve read by Darrell Gregory.

I have to chuckle at the negative reviews, they all seem upset that this wasn’t some serious, dark, intricate tail.

I would think that anybody could figure that out just by reading the title. This was short and fun. I will probably listen to it again at some point.
