About this listen

Driven by a sense of duty and fear of monotony, Sara Lee leaves her comfortable life and fiance in Philadelphia to serve the Red Cross in Belgium during WWI. The spirited heroine finds a niche for herself helping the wounded soldiers. She meets a mysterious gentleman and falls into a haunting romance.

The Amazing Interlude is a bittersweet journey that draws from Mary Rinehart's own experience as a World War I correspondent. Fusing fiction with fact, she deftly portrays an exhilarating tale of an honorable woman's determination to make a difference in a time of tumultuous war.

Editorial reviews

Torn between two worlds, Sara Lee Kennedy must choose whether to stay with the man to whom she is betrothed or to follow her adventurous heart. Written for women by a woman, Mary Roberts Rinehart's story examines the plight of the fair sex in the early 1900s, but still the themes resonate today. Shelly Frasier's heartfelt voice brings intensity to this World War I romance. Reveling in each delicious word, Frasier handles both accents and men's voices extremely well using the full register of her voice. This audiobook is a must for smitten travelers, or those who wish they were.

Good listening

The author is indeed gifted. A biography is included before the book-nice. Fun, mysterious listening. Keeps you guessing until the end.

WWI Love Story

I loved this story of one young woman's fight to challenge convention make a difference in a world consumed with war. It is funny, romantic and tragic without being syrupy or maudlin. I didn't want it to end.

Very Lovely

I'll preface this by saying I like contemporary fiction. I'm not a history buff but occasionally I enjoy a novel set in WWI or WWII era. That said, this was a beautiful book. The characters were full and well developed. The story matured with the characters. The author has a beautiful way with words. The dialogue was scarce but her narrative painted the picture. The narrator was one of the best readers I've listened. As I have at least 300 books in my library, I feel qualified to say that. There wasn't one point that the narration made me cringe and that doesn't happen often. Truly this was a wonderful listen.

a breath of fresh air

This is a tender sweet book. It is written at the turn of the century and gives insights of the Great War or WWI. It is an uplifting love story that is a pleasure to read. It makes me want to read more of Mary Roberts Rinehart.

Enjoyable

Good storyline, believable characters who are interesting to watch as they "grow". The narrator was quite good - changed voices and accents well. Not a 5 star mainly because it wasn't an OMG type of book.

Wonderful

Beautifully written and narrated, it grabs your heart unexpectedly and you must find out what happens. Listen to this classic but simply told story of war, and the redemptive love of service. It is an amazing story!

Not So Amazing

I guess I've just overdosed on beautiful, innocent, naive heroines who do great things but are really humble and don't know that they are beautiful or that they do great things until the man of their dreams falls madly in love with them.
