About this listen

Best-selling author and radio host Michael Medved recounts some of the most significant events in America's rise to prosperity and power, from the writing of the Constitution to the Civil War. He reveals a record of improbabilities and amazements that demonstrate what the Founders always believed: that events unfolded according to a master plan, with destiny playing an unmistakable role in lifting the nation to greatness.

Among the stirring, illogical episodes described here:

  • A band of desperate religious refugees find themselves blown hopelessly off course, only to be deposited at the one spot on a wild continent best suited for their survival
  • George Washington's beaten army, surrounded by a ruthless foe and on the verge of annihilation, manages an impossible escape due to a freakish change in the weather
  • A famous conqueror known for seizing territory, frustrated by a slave rebellion and a frozen harbor, impulsively hands Thomas Jefferson a tract of land that doubles the size of the United States
  • A weary soldier picks up three cigars left behind in an open field and notices the stogies have been wrapped in a handwritten description of the enemy's secret battle plans - a revelation that gives Lincoln the supernatural sign he's awaited in order to free the slaves

When millions worry over the nation losing its way, Medved's sweeping narrative, bursting with dramatic events and lively portraits of unforgettable, occasionally little-known characters, affirms America as "fortune's favorite", shaped by a distinctive destiny from our beginnings to the present day.

Critic reviews

"Absolutely spectacular. This book is must-reading for anyone not yet fully convinced that God's hand has been on America from the very beginning. The stories in it are genuinely staggering, fascinating, eye-opening, and deeply inspiring. Please do yourself a favor and read this book!" (Eric Metaxas, New York Times best-selling author of Bonhoeffer and If You Can Keep It)
"Whether it was God or the gods, some crucial moments in American history have turned on providential events that defy rational explanation. Medved has a keen eye for such semi-supernatural stories, and tells them with his customary clarity." (Joseph J. Ellis, Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner; author of Founding Brothers)
"Michael Medved does a beautiful job of piecing together the most providential parts of our history - from the story of 'indestructible' George Washington to 'the miracle of Lincoln.' And I can't help but agree with his argument: To believe America is exceptional is simply to be grateful for what God has given us." (Paul Ryan, speaker of the US House of Representatives)

Great, thought provoking book.

This book did a great job organizing all the bits and pieces of Divine intervention you hear about growing up. And much of the stories read like a great novel.

One of the best American history lessons

This book has many, many interesting facts I have never heard before. As example: I was taught that gold was discovered in California which resulted in the great California gold rush. I was not taught that there was a treaty being signed, the very same week and possibly the very same day, that gold was first discovered. A Mexican delegation and an American delegate signed the treaty to end the war between Mexico and The United States. A huge area of northern Mexico was ceded to the United States, including California. When gold was discovered California was still Mexican territory. Neither one of the parties signing the treaty were aware of the discovery of gold while negotiations were ongoing.

A Hopeful Message For America's Future!

Thank-you, Michael, for a beautiful retelling of God's active participation in America's amazing history. A lot of us are praying with all our hearts that He will again show us the path to victory in the current battles of good versus evil.

The history I never learned in school

Some of the miracles in this book, I already heard about. Even with those stories, Medved added many details I didn't know about, like the background, events that led up to the miracle, details about the people involved, and why the events were important and how they changed history. I enjoyed history class, but I wish Michael Medved had been my teacher.

Terrific!

What made the experience of listening to The American Miracle the most enjoyable?

The providential "coincidences" he chronicles throughout the work are enough to literally make the spine tingle. The content is fascinating! And in addition to being an historian, Michael is an excellent storyteller. Read in a clear and deliberate way that helped me relish every detail.

I feel we've been given a gift by Michael Medved through his research, creation of and performance of this audiobook. This is far and away beyond what I consider just a "good book." 5 stars with no reservations. Loved it!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Well done history of early America, with notable twists of fate, good and bad. This book confirmed my love of history and this Nation.

Incredibly Insightful and Illuminating

I read an author interview about Mr. Medved in the Epoch Times that led me to his books. I was happy to find this version on audible and have been steadily chipping away at while I do work in the kitchen. Things in America can seem gloomy, especially if you watch too much news, but this book showed me that God’s hand has been on our country from the beginning and will continue to remain that way. It buoyed my spirits to hear of the many miracles and “coincidences” throughout our history. I know so much more about history now. It’s a fascinating subject.
I like Mr. Medved’s reading style. It wasn’t dry, but had accents at appropriate places and conviction Of that which he was reading.
A final note, the author doesn’t gloss over the troubling parts of our countries past: treatment of indigenous peoples, slavery, internment and the like. He discusses it and brings more to the conversation than is usually discussed, in my opinion. Definitely a great book to read or listen to!
