Publisher's summary

Long ago, Bryn tried to use a gemstone to focus his magic so he could stave off dark mages, who were threatening. Mid-spell, the tourmaline broke – into one green half and one pink half. Bryn finds he can use the green half, set in an amulet of his making, to enhance his power. The pink half responds to his wife, Paire, giving her more power as well. Using the Amulets of Power, they are able to defeat the dark mages and drive them back to wherever they came from. But the unintended consequence of Bryn’s spell is the dividing magic into organic and elemental. Elemental mages can only use any of the four elements in their magic: fire, air, earth, and water. Organic mages only have the ability to work with anything organic. In present day, Sorcha, a young organic mage, and Aidan, a young elemental mage, have fallen in love. When they find out her father, Riordan, has been imprisoned for the past 15 years by the dark mage, Scanlan, they set off to rescue him. They are joined by fellow mages – both friends and family. None of them has ever used their magic in anger, but Aidan and Sorcha do think they have an advantage – their newly discovered ability to combine her organic magic with his elemental. But will it be enough to beat Scanlan? And what does it mean that they have this ability to combine their powers – something that has only cropped up twice since the days of Bryn and Paire? Is this ‘old magic’ or is ‘old magic’ something else entirely? And where in the world are the Amulets of Power Bryn and Paire used?
