About this listen

The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790. This work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written.

Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them. Franklin's Autobiography has received widespread praise, both for its historical value as a record of an important early American and for its literary style. It is often considered the first American book to be taken seriously by Europeans as literature.

William Dean Howells in 1905 asserted that "Franklin's is one of the greatest autobiographies in literature, and towers over other autobiographies as Franklin towered over other men."

Wonderful Narration of an Important Autobiography

Getting this in an audiobook most certainly helped us get through it. My 13 year son who loves history listened to this one too and I was impressed that he got through it in a matter of a 3 days. He liked that they tried to have it read in voice that sounds like Benjamin Franklin in Liberty Kids and other tv shows. It is very interesting to listen to the account written by the man himself and to get his insights and reactions. I would definitely recommend as an important part of history but it is one that I had to break up and do 30 mins here and an hour there.

The first American

Where to begin... Dense, esoteric, profound, flawed, unfocused, of its time, historical, important, ... How do you presume to review such a work by such a man? Listening to the entire thing is a chore and perhaps not one I should have undertaken in only 1 day. However, having good narration helped. A lot!

My advice to others is to take frequent breaks during which you should look at some analysis. (I used Spark Notes but any others will do.)
