About this listen
Sloane, sheltered, yet persistent, believes she’s capable, and longs for everyone to see past her disabled leg. Selling at Market Day unaccompanied is the chance to prove herself. But when she returns home to her village, she’s shattered to discover the Befallen has killed everyone. Having nothing but her faith in the goddesses of the moon, she’s forced to test her strength in the outside world. Sloane realizes the kingdom is dangerous even without the Befallen: full of thieves, thugs, and, worse, heretics.
Sloane is further shocked no one seems to know the entire legend, which promises a hero will defeat the Befallen. When she learns an order of knights have vowed to fulfill the legend, she’s determined to help them as she alone was taught that a weapon will be gifted from the seldom-seen goddess of the Azure Moon.
Sir Tolvar, a banished, famed knight, wrestling with the demons of his past, is skeptical. He’s reluctant to let Sloane join their cause until she convinces him that faith carries its own power.
As the two uncover the mysteries surrounding the Befallen—growing steadily stronger—an impossible task is thrust upon Sloane that makes her question everything...

Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

I am not a reader - but I enjoyed this book!
I’m not someone who usually picks up a book—I’d rather watch a movie or binge a TV series about cooking or BBQ, but The Befallen hooked met. I found the story relatable and engaging. It kept me wondering what was next, the whole way through.
It was never boring or just had "filler story". There’s plenty of things happening to keep things exciting, but also quieter moments where you’re just rooting for the characters to acheive or overcome what they are up against. I love the characters of Sloan and Tolvar. I found myself caring about what happened and creating my own expectation for how things would turn out in the end. The story moves at a good pace, never dragging, with mindless information or useless facts or insights that didnt add to the story. There was enough detail to keep me in the going without bogging things down. It left me curious for more and hopeful for what was next. I’d love to know what happens next with some of these characters.. It’s like the story gave me enough to feel satisfied while still leaving me hungry for what may be next.
The balance was perfect. It’s the kind of tale that’d make a great movie or series, but even as a book, it kept me turning pages way past when I’d normally quit. I do hope there is more to come from Cambria.

Loved it
Wow. This book has many twists & turns & they start in the beginning. Everything Sloane goes through. At first like many who have lots a trials she is just happy to be alive & considers herself a bad luck charm. Thanks to Alvie (sp) who shows her that the has had bad luck too & bringing her on their wagon would not change anything. These two become inseparable like brother & sister. It a wonderful relationship see develop.
The Wolf who has his own horrors is looking for the Unsung. The unsung will defeat The Befallen whom is raving cities & towns & killing them where they stand, without bias. On this journey Sloane learns lots about herself, those around her, who to trust, & putting piece of the Edan Law Puzzle together. I also over the narrator the voices really brought the book to life but too often the voices were so soft that even with my phone all the way up I still couldn’t understand what was being said. I had to listen to it through a speaker that could play louder.
A great high fantasy book. I recommend to fantasy, & adventure lovers.

A Story of Moon Magic and Hope
This is a story of the moon, magic, hope, and love over evil. I love Sloane's character. She represents goodness and strength. She is relatable as she is on a journey of letting go of her self-doubts and embracing her inner strength. My favorite character might be Alvie. He is light-hearted and fun to be around. He isn't charismatic and attractive but humble, friendly, and a light to be around. I connected personally to William’s characters and felt close to them while reading. This story is an incredible read that I highly recommend.

Excited for the next book!
I loved The Lord of the Rings Series and Harry Potter, but I generally am not drawn to fantasy books. I have trouble with my eyes and reading the written word now days, and so rely on mostly audiobooks for my reading enjoyment. With that said, I have not read the Befallen paperback.
It was a slow go at first for me because I don't really go in for fantasy, but at some point I got into the story and the play between the characters. I appreciated Cambria not being afraid to get into the grittiness of Lord Tolvar. The war/fight scenes seemed real as well. Though I'll admit I was able to predict some of what happened, Cambria held some information back and was able to build suspense in the story. I am very surprised this is Cambria Williams' first book.
Ink Arnadine was a remarkable reader. Her voices were terribly good. The only thing difficult for me was she read rather slowly. Her pace was just a little bit slower than it ought to be. So in order to make it a more enjoyable read, I changed the speed to 1.2. Choosing a British reader was wise. It just wouldn't have worked with an American accent.
As I stated in the header, I am looking forward to Cambria Williams' next book in the series. At least I hope it's going to be a series!

An epic dark fantasy delivers on every level!
I loved reading this book when it came out a few months ago. The author's prose, characterization and worldbuilding is up there with the best of them. You'd never know this was Cambria Williams's debut fantasy novel. When I read it, I couldn't put it down. I was engrossed by everything the novel has to offer.
The audiobook is on another level. It matches the tone and feel that the novel accomplished. Ink Arnadine's voice as Sloane and the other characters in her journey is positively haunting. It feels almost ethereal in a way.
Check out The Befallen! You will not regret it.

Amazing story of heroism, belief and growing into yourself
Wow, couldn’t stop listening, so fun and exciting! Love the characters, goes so quickly from one character to another and builds upon itself. Such beautiful imagery and could really understand who the characters are. Absolutely recommend for all that love adventure

inspiring!!
over and above the action and fantasy, this is a story about triumph over personal adversity. About not letting one's circumstances dictate their path. Ink Arnadine flawlessly brings out the nuances of the characters and the story

Cambria’s writing is exquisite!
I don’t like to give away much in a review, other than my overall opinion of the writing and the story, both of which were absolutely exquisite. A true character driven story with a beautiful world to accompany it! Cambria’s message to all of us is on of courage and honor and duty, but most of all, purpose. A message we all need at some point in our lives. This book is well worth the read! I hope you enjoy it much as I.
