The defining mission of Mai Fisher's career as a spy for the United Nations Intelligence Directorate occurred in the mid-1980s when she went undercover in the IRA, a mission she almost didn't survive. A bomb she made to destroy an illicit shipment of plastic explosive went off too soon. Nine IRA members died, most as they slept, a burden she carried the rest of her active career.

Then, a retired British soldier has a secret he needs to get off his chest before he dies, and the telling of it send Mai on a trip through her sketchy memory of that mission and its aftermath: Her struggle to recover, her return to full status, minor glitches in subsequent missions, the false courage she got from cocaine, her capture by the East German Stasi, and when she told her partner - and husband - she fell in love while pretending to be in the IRA.

Once the soldier reveals the truth, Mai realizes that burden, which had defined her for all those years, wasn't hers alone.

I am a fan of P.A. Duncan on Kindle. Since I have switched over to audiobooks only because of my vision issues I have missed reading Duncan’s intelligent, gripping and sexy espionage thrillers.

You can only guess how excited I was to find out that Duncan released The Better Spy as an audiobook.

Duncan’s writing excels in audio format. Haidman’s narration with brilliantly done accents brings Duncan’s characters out to play in a riveting read.

I had a hard time putting this book aside several times to get some work done because I wanted to listen to “just a bit more.” The Better Spy is filled with raw emotion, action, and great writing that not only engages the reader in the characters’ lives but involves the reader in the thrill of being a spy.

Try Duncan’s work if you not only want to read about espionage but be the operative.
