  • Day 305: The Defender (2024)
    Oct 31 2024
As we hear the re-telling of the story of Judas Maccabbeus and his brothers fighting for the honor of the Lord's Temple in 2 Maccabees, Fr. Mike points out how this version gives us an insight into their recognition of God's presence, mercy, and justice in their circumstances. We learn that no matter what we are going through, we can trust that God is our great defender who is present and active in all circumstances of our lives. Today's readings are 2 Maccabees 8, Wisdom 5-6, and Proverbs 24:30-34. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/bibleinayear. • Day 304: Life Beyond Death (2024)
    Oct 30 2024
Fr. Mike focuses on the powerful theme that connects all of our readings today- the reality of life beyond death. In the story of the martyrdom of the seven brothers in 2 Macabees, we see how the brothers and their mother fiercely reject the temptation to violate God's law, and boldly hold onto their hope in the resurrection of the dead. Our readings from Wisdom also remind us that death is not the end, because we know that eternal life is waiting for us beyond death. Today's readings are 2 Maccabees 7, Wisdom 3-4, and Proverbs 24:27-29. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/bibleinayear. • Day 303: Eleazar's Martyrdom (2024)
    Oct 29 2024
Fr. Mike offers a recap of Eleazar's martyrdom and marvels at Eleazar's courage to avoid both sin, and the temptation to lead others into sin. As we begin reading the book of Wisdom today, we also learn three valuable lessons; God did not create death, death entered the world through sin, and we are wise when we walk in the truth but foolish when we walk in evil. Today's readings are 2 Maccabees 6, Wisdom 1-2, and Proverbs 24:21-26. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/bibleinayear. What I needed in 2021

How many times have I started reading Genesis in January and given up on Leviticus in March? Lots of times. This podcast is the way to “read” the Bible. Listen to Father Mike read in an order that makes sense and presents the Bible as a storyline rather than separate disjointed chapters. Plus, Father Mike explains the confusing parts. I look forward to my 20 minutes a day with Father Mike and the Bible. And, this time, I will make it through the Bible in a year. Not just make it through to make it through. Instead, I will learn about my faith a little more every day. Brilliant idea. Fantastic podcast. Thank you, Father Mike!

Wow. Father Mike brings the bible to life for me.

Throughout my life I have tried to read the bible and always gave up because I could not interpret the meaning or understand what it was saying. Father Mike has changed all of that. I am so deeply moved when listening to the bible and Father Mike's explanation of what was read each day. It is a fascinating story that has strengthened my faith. I am so grateful I found this.

God's Precious Stones

I am a member of a small Christian denomination that is neither Catholic nor Protestant. We believe that the Word of God is most holy. We are taught to read and meditate on a chapter or two each day, with the purpose of applying the truths and goods we learn there to our everyday lives.
So I am excited to be able to join Father Mike and other listeners as we journey through the expanse of Divine Scripture. Sometimes the Bible is hard for me to comprehend, but often, it helps when I keep on reading, and praying, for God's light and warmth. The Lord's Word is like a rough wooden box, which when opened, contains so many precious stones. Thank you, Father Mike, for encouraging us to keep the Word's lid open so that God's Light and Love can shine out for all.

I've always wanted to do this

Committing to the task of reading through the Bible in a year can be daunting. Having a guide, and better yet a Podcast, takes the fear of failing away. I can go at my own pace and finish when I finish. Fr. Mike's narration and reflections are excellent and eye-opening. Thank you.

Fantastic

Love Father Schmitz - he reads the Bible well but his insights and analysis are the best. Sometimes I struggle through to get the meaning but he explains it well. As an aside - after I listen I also go back and read it the printed bible so I will get thru the Bible twice in one year- somethings I would not have thought possible. Thank you for this - couldn’t come at a better time with the current breakdown of society
