You can’t truly understand the last decade of the 20th century without a look at the muddy, electrifying rock music that would come to define it: grunge. For such a short-lived genre—at least in the mainstream—grunge had a lasting impact on American music and culture. It also provides a unique lens through which to examine the post-Reagan, pre-internet America of the 1990s. In the six lectures of The Story of Grunge, you’ll explore the rise and evolution of the genre, tracing it from Seattle subculture to MTV and the Billboard charts, all the way to its decline and evolution into new forms.

Story
The very strange but nevertheless true story of the dark underbelly of a 1960s hippie utopia. Laurel Canyon in the 1960s and early 1970s was a magical place where a dizzying array of musical artists congregated to create much of the music that provided the soundtrack to those turbulent times. But there was a dark side to that scene as well. Many didn't make it out alive, and many of those deaths remain shrouded in mystery to this day.

No one other than Warren Zanes, rocker and writer and friend, could author a book about Tom Petty that is as honest and evocative of Petty's music and the remarkable rock and roll history he and his band helped to write. Born in Gainesville, Florida, with more than a little hillbilly in his blood, Tom Petty was a Southern shit kicker, a kid without a whole lot of promise. Rock and roll made it otherwise.

Over the fifty years that Lorne Michaels has been at the helm of Saturday Night Live, he has become a revered and inimitable presence in the entertainment world. He’s a tastemaker, a mogul, a withholding father figure, a genius spotter of talent, a shrewd businessman, a name-dropper, a raconteur, the inspiration for Dr. Evil, the winner of more than a hundred Emmys—and, essentially, a mystery. Generations of writers and performers have spent their lives trying to figure him out, by turns demonizing and lionizing him.

What an incredible nostalgic Time Machine this was
This audiobook was an incredible Time Machine for me. The 90s definitely had some bad spots in it, but for me it had so many bright spots, as I’m sure it did for many people. For 90s music it meant different things to different people. To some people it was all about the grunge or maybe the boys bands. Although that may be true for me, my favorite artist to come out of the 90s with Shania Twain. but I appreciate all of the artists from the 90s. It was such an amazing decade. As for the audiobook, the way it was structured and narrated was so incredibly well done. I learned so much throughout the book. My mind is always in a learning state. I want to thank the author for creating this ingenious book! I would like to see him create one for the 70s and 80s as well. Who knows? Maybe he already has one and I don’t know it. Well done!!

Fun trip down memory lane
I recently listened to "The Big 500: 1990s Music Trivia and Fun Facts" by Nick Swettenham, and it was such a fun trip down memory lane. The audiobook features 350 trivia questions across various genres like pop, rock, hip-hop, and heavy metal, along with 150 interesting facts about artists and bands from that era. It was both fun and informative, making it a great choice for anyone looking to revisit the music of the '90s.

Nostalgia Overload - In The Best Way!
I listened to this as a road trip companion, and wow, what a blast! My friends and I spent hours testing each other's 90s music knowledge, discovering I'm apparently a walking encyclopedia of one-hit wonders (who knew?). The mix of trivia and fun facts kept things challenging, and I learned some wild stuff about songs I've heard a thousand times. Perfect difficulty level - challenging enough to make you think but not so obscure that it gets frustrating. It's such a fun way to relive the golden age of music!

Such a great choice !
I enjoyed testing my knowledge while listening. Some questions were easy, and I knew the answers right away. Others made me think hard or even learn something new. The fun facts were also interesting! They reminded me of famous songs, bands, and events from that time. This audiobook is great for playing alone or with friends. I had fun challenging myself and seeing how much I remembered from the 90s. If you love music and trivia, this is a great choice!

Totally took me back
This was such a fun throwback—I grew up in the 90s, so half the time I was shouting out answers before they even finished the question. I really loved the section on soundtrack songs from 90s movies (my daughter was cracking up hearing how into Clueless and The Bodyguard I still am). It honestly turned into a cute little bonding moment, with her asking me who half the artists were and me pulling up the music on Spotify. It reminded me how great that music was and how much of it I still know by heart.
