About this listen

When a fire in an abandoned fruit stand in rural Lincoln County reveals the murdered body of a woman gone missing from Sante Fe years ago, Police Chief Kevin Kerney finds himself cooperating with his estranged son, a man he hardly knows, Deputy Sheriff Clayton Istee. While Kerney digs into the woman's past, hoping to find clues that will lead to a credible suspect, Clayton must unravel two more homicides that seem on the surface totally unrelated.

As Kerney chases down clues that raise questions about the legitimacy of a highly regarded modeling and talent agency, Clayton works to discover the identity of a murder suspect alleged to have ties to prostitution and illegal gambling. Set against the backdrop of the high mountains of southern New Mexico, where gambling is big business and private sexual encounters for VIPs can be discreetly arranged, Kerney and Clayton must go up against the rich and politically powerful opponents who are willing to protect their reputations at all costs.

I wish the author would quit with all of the political correctness. And just write.

Great Story

McGarrity's books fall into the same category for me as Craig Johnson's and Tony Hillerman's books: well-crafted police suspense with a very strong sense of time, place, and character.

This book has a bit less jeopardy and suspense than some others in the series, but the character interactions are quite good and the plot made sense and maintained my interest to the end.

Recommended.

Good police procedural

Nothing happens in this book. After the first chapters one knows the good guys and the bad guys. There are no interesting characters, no protagonist that have challenges to overcome. The characters, even the bad guys act rationally averting the “run down the center of the street as the car chasing you” stupidly that is needed for this type of book. NOTHING HAPPENS to build tension. There is no mystery to solve. What a come down from his first two books.

Boring

Story was just ok but the book ended suddenly and unexpectedly. What was the fate of the rest of the bad guys?

Abrupt ending
