About this listen

Buck Horn's West is still out there, albeit a little harder to find. These are tales of a not so bygone era before environmental laws and the price of fuel got out of control. As long as there is a desert range and a little bit of water, there will be the hardy few trying to grow cows and there will be the Cowboys and horses to take care of them.

Buck's stories are a glance into a West that is rapidly disappearing. It is an honest look at the roundups, camp life, cowpunchers, and the horses that made it all possible.

Fantastic little book!

Where does The Big String rank among all the audiobooks you???ve listened to so far?

This is one of the best little surprises I could have ever hoped for! It is without a doubt my favorite book of short stories now. I will keep it and listen to it again and again. I'm even going to try to get everyone I know to download this book as well. It's got something in there for everyone, not just cowboys! Some of the stories have more than one story line woven in. It's a book I wish didn't have to end.

What did you like best about this story?

This book is intelligently written as well as having the perfect mix of colloquialisms tossed in to make it authentic rather than corny. I also found that the author wrote from his heart. I think that's what I liked most of all.

Which scene was your favorite?

Two stories stand out for me, Listerine and Britchin'. I loved them all but those two are the ones I quote most often when I tell someone about this book.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Typically I don't purchase shorter books because I don't feel I get my money's worth. But something about this book just caught my attention. I can't say why. I got this book because it looked like the author might actually know what being a cowboy is like in the American west. The title of the book was my first tip. While listening to it, it made me realize that not only is the author likely a true cowboy, but it's filled with stories that tug on every human emotion possible. Some of the stories are hilarious, some are sad, some are so tender and filled with heart that it just made me want to savor every word written. I laughed and cried and everything in between. What a wonderful little book!
