If you have an interest in Bitcoin, you need this

Have you ever wondered what all the hype and talk around Bitcoin was about? Have you asked yourself if you should own a piece of this digital currency, and if you did, what would you do with it? What are all these other cryptocurrencies people are speaking about, the blockchain, and the jumble of other terminology swirling around this mysterious technology? Are you looking to earn your own blue or black belt when it comes to your knowledge of Bitcoin? Most of the population does not understand how or why this new currency exists or why they would want it. Well, if you answered yes to any of the above questions, you would find your answers in the newly revised and updated “The Bitcoin Book: A Beginner's Guide to the Future of Finance” written by Matthew Underhill and quite well narrated by Stefan Gleisner. I can say that I came to this book with some hesitation about its focus or agenda base on its subtitle containing the word “finance”. So many books on this subject of Bitcoin are released claiming to educate the listener but most are nothing more than a quick money grab in this ever-changing environment. I can say that after agreeing to listen and review this book, I was happy I did, and I even learned much in the process. If you are looking to educate yourself or are simply just looking for a quick primer on Bitcoin, this is a great audiobook to pick up. If you are looking for a great history of Bitcoin, I can also recommend Digital Gold another fascinating listen.

The book opens with a very good and important disclaimer. The material found in the audio pages is for educational purposes only and the audiobook is not giving you financial or tax advice. Upon hearing this, I was able to let my guard down some and focus more on what the author was wanting to teach me. I’m all for education, but not for a get rich quick scheme. Thankfully, this book is chock full of bits of audio gold as it covers some of the history of currency, older standards like the gold standard, etc. It also briefly covers some of the issues with centralized ‘fiat’ currencies, but I felt that the author did a great job of being unbiased in his writing; it was more like older news broadcasts where the facts were stated, and you could come to your own conclusions. Opening with a history of currency and the issues around power are important to understand why Bitcoin was created in the first place. I found it interesting that the author of Bitcoin really did so by building upon others research and attempts at a truly decentralized non-fiat currency; on a side note, the author also believed the creator is a ‘she’ which I have not heard from others. Understanding other financial terms such as inflation (and in some instances hyperinflation) made it easier to know the importance of Bitcoin and even a few other cryptocurrencies. Understanding that Bitcoin is like real gold was an eye opener for me and it helped me to better understand why the term “mining” was used when creating these coins. Bitcoin is based off a digital asset which is limited in quantity and created at a known rate. There is no way of inflating this asset by flooding the market with more than the intended number of coins. Some have even claimed that soon, Bitcoin will become the new gold standard that many other governments will back their fiat currencies off to limit the potential of inflation. Interesting thought.

There was so much in this book that any person, new to the technology or an expert, will be able to glean something from its audio pages. I also enjoyed that the author threw in bits of humor along the way as some of the chapter can be rather heavy topics in the subjects of finance, crypto, and math. For me, the things that really stood out, which I’m sure others may not know, is that Bitcoin can be easily divided into every small portion of a whole. For example, a US Dollar can be broken down to its smallest denomination of a cent. So, one hundred cents can make a whole dollar. Bitcoin’s scale is even greater as it can be divided into millionths of a single coin. This easily divisible nature of Bitcoin allows one to use the coins for much smaller transactions such as buying a candy bar up to large items such as a car or even a house. The author, along with the many disclaimers as to the financial returns of Bitcoin, suggests that one can easily put a few dollars a week into buying a portion of a Bitcoin and does not need to jump in fully by investing in purchasing a single whole coin. There is a very well-done chapter around security and safety of storing your currencies as you are now you own banker along with the need to back up your keys and currencies as if they are lost, they are gone forever. This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the subjects covered in this audiobook. I recommend you give the table of contents a look or visit the author’s website for more details. Again, if you have any interest in learning about this subject, I recommend you give this audiobook a listen.

The audiobook’s narration was performed by Stefan Gleisner and it appears this is his first audiobook narration on the Audible platform. I found his audio professional, the pace well done, and no noticeable audio artifacts (swallows, page turns, etc.) while listening. His pronunciation was clear. The narrator also seemed to know his subject matter and did not simply read it in a monotone way, but instead kept the listener engaged even during the more difficult subjects. I would easily listen to other material narrated by Mr. Glisner when, or if, he ever releases more.

For parents and younger listeners, there was nothing in this book that was mature or out of line for a younger listener. The subject matter may be not as interesting for younger people, however there may be some that are fascinated by the subject and want to give this audiobook a listen. I would say this is a book that could be enjoyed by all age groups.

In summary, I can say that I walked away from this audiobook with a deeper understanding of Bitcoin and how it works. I also learned about the importance of protecting and securing one’s own digital assets. There were chapters briefly covering other cryptocurrencies and even why these exist when it seems Bitcoin is the king of crypto currently. A small section on NFTs and other items related to crypto were also included. Solid writing, solid narration, and overall, a solid piece of work as a primer to the Bitcoin.
