About this listen

Max Freeman's old life ended on a night that will haunt him forever. The night he killed a twelve-year-old child in self-defense in a Philadelphia shootout. The night he stopped being a cop. Now he lives a solitary existence on the edge of the Florida Everglades, where he answers to no one but the demons that eat away at his conscience. When he finds the corpse of a child beside an ancient river and another child goes missing, all eyes turn to Freeman. The ex-cop, driven by his old habits and the memories of that long-ago Philadelphia midnight, knows that he has no choice but to hunt down the seemingly unstoppable murderer himself. An electrifying story of crime, punishment, and one man's personal redemption played out against a backdrop of wild natural beauty in conflict with the modern urban world.©2003 Jonathon King (P)2010 AudioGO LTD Crime Fiction Private Investigators Suspense Fiction Mystery Detective

Kept My Interest

This book is very interesting. He has a lawyer who he consults regularly, but whose advise he ignores. He also knows he should not get keep investigating the crimes since he is a suspect, but he can't resist. Altogether it makes a great story.

Highly recommended.

Great Story

Finally a good listen! Some violence but at least it was all sex & drinking. Maybe I need to stick with male authors....

Acceptable thriller with cliches and stupidity

Like a Carl Hiaasen novel but no intentional humor. Set in late 1990s probably, picture an ex-cop living alone in a shack with cellphone reception but no phone and without electricity or companionship for a year. We’re given a backstory but not much on how he filled his conscious hours for that year. Dwelling on negatives and lack of practice in critical thinking might lead to poor decision-making as our protagonist displays. He courts trouble with police and highly stereotypical thugs as he runs up tens of thousands of dollars in lawyer fees after discovering a planted dead body. Will he eventually be a hero? Will he win approval from a girl? Will it be worth it? Why does he use a Mason jar (carried in a fannypack) for a water bottle? Why doesn’t he buy a knife or cellphone at a store? I finished the book and am not sure these questions are fully answered.

Mystery in the Florida Everglades

Max Freeman, a former Philadelphia cop, medically retired to Florida, and trying to live a peaceable life in a remote area of the everglades has a murder foisted upon him and is forced back into action. The body of a child is discovered and another gone missing, and it seems that the killer has targeted him as a suspect. After having killed a twelve-year old boy in the line of duty in Philly, he wants nothing else to do with hunting down killers, but the voodoo of the swamp and the back woods ways of its inhabitants leave Max little choice but to fight for his life and try to find the killer. The atmospheric beauty, wild and unusual natural habitat and flashbacks to his time on the police force are expertly depicted, and add to the story, which takes the listener on a nonstop roller coaster ride. Unable to tell who is friend and who is foe, you will be gripping the edge of your seat as you hold on for the conclusion of what turns out to be a top notch thriller.

Great Suspenseful Story

I enjoyed the twists and turns throughout the story. it was hard to put the book down as the story developed. I recommend this story for the young adult reader, although there's some violence in the story there's no sexual content.
