About this listen

Centuries old and thousands of miles from home...

When Emily and Jess Volnik's family inherits a remote, crumbling Scottish castle, they also inherit the Boggart - an invisible, mischievous spirit who's been playing tricks on residents of Castle Keep for generations. Then the Boggart is trapped in a rolltop desk and inadvertently shipped to the Volniks' home in Toronto, where nothing will ever be the same - for the Volniks or the Boggart.

In a world that doesn't believe in magic, the Boggart's pranks wreak havoc. And even the newfound joys of peanut butter and pizza and fudge sauce eventually wear thin for the Boggart. He wants to go home - but his only hope lies in a risky and daring blend of modern technology and ancient magic.

A Delightful Story

I have read this book as well as listened to it here on Audible both are delightful experiences. I think I perhaps preferred reading it but it has been a joy to sit and knit and listen to this recording.

Susan Cooper is remarkable writer and I highly recommend her The Dark is Rising series either to read or to listen to on Audible. The recording of this series is outstanding. Highly recommend.

Magical

I read this book in the fourth or fifth grade and adored it. This was THE book that got me to love reading! I’m now a mommy of two crazy little boys, so I wanted to share this book with them. It’s just as magical as I remembered. The narrator is absolutely perfect! Loved every second of this!!!

Love the Boggart

From first read, a favorite. Computer issues dated but wonderful story. Love it and never tire of his journey home.

Delightful!

Listened to the whole tale in one go. Have read the book quite a few times, but the audio version greatly enhanced the 'realness' of the story. And the narration was excellent - reminded me of Scots voices I heard when we visited there in 2001. Thoroughly enjoyed this book; thanks, Audible!

A modern classic

This story has all of the earmarks of a classic fairy tale, mixed with Scottish folklore, modern and believable protagonists, all mixed together in what could easily be one of the better Disney movies of our youth. While written, obviously, for younger readers, the story doesn't shy away from topics like adult biases, death, mourning, and loneliness. This last, in many ways, is the driving force behind this story. It also gives the youthful protagonists intelligence and empathy. The supporting cast is well drawn out, with the possible exception of one character, who is described throughout the story as 'a creep". He tends to be less well drawn. There is even a non-traditional couple hinted at, without any pointless embellishments that often follow such characters. Here they are simply shown as lovingly supportive of the kids in the story. I recommend this book.

Under appreciated masterpiece

Belonging to that special category of magical stories so often associated with Gaiman and Rowling the boggart is one of my all time favorites. The audio production is the same as I remember it from the library copy I so often checked out as a boy with the narrators delightful Scottish accent and diction. Short and sweet this is a story not to be missed.

Excellent. A Classic Work of Children Literature

Highly recommended. Great story. One you will get comfortably lost in and not want to return from.
