I was there in 1692, kneeling at the edge of the fire where my mother and the other accused perished. I was there when the three witches found us and separated me from my sisters. So, to answer the question, yes, witches are real. For years, I've tried to find Cecily and Eris, tried to leave the memory of that night behind, to move past the pain of losing them. After all, it's the twenty-first century now, not the seventeenth, and while they really are witches, I am not one of them. There are no magic or special powers in me. I'm just a book lover in a small-town bookshop. So, why am I the only one that believes that? The woman who came to the shop today certainly does not. There was something dark and wicked about her.
