About this listen

The Burglar originates in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. John Mattingly and his wife, Madge, live in a quiet suburban neighborhood. Their home is burglarized, and the only witnesses are the family dog, Max, and the cat, Penny. Ironically, much of the story is told from the pets’ point of view. While the home’s security cameras catch a portion of the burglary, Max has the job of somehow identifying the crook. Look for two bumbling police officers, Peachtree and Gordon, who are comical throughout the adventure. The chase begins in Kentucky and leads authorities to the Smoky Mountains and through the swamps of Central Florida. Lots of questions need to be answered:

Why did the Burglar break into the home in the Queen City? Will they catch him alive? What will happen if he gets away? What will happen to the policewoman who was kidnapped? Through a burglary and a kidnapping, the story displays two strange relationships - one between humans and their pets and the other between a burglar and a police hostage named Mattie. As the authorities chase them, the Burglar and Mattie discover they have common threads–and they are quite surprised at what they discover about themselves.

This short book is a thrilling nail-biter from start to finish! The story is entertaining for kids since it has short chapters and an easy plot. Appropriate for ages 13 and up.

This was an entertaining and creative listen, especially with the story told from the pets’ point of view! The mix of light suspense, quirky characters, and two bumbling cops made for a fun ride from Ohio to Florida. While the story kept me engaged, the narration could’ve used a little more polish—especially with clearer pauses between chapters to help with pacing. Still, it was a unique and enjoyable audiobook with some surprising twists along the way.

In a quiet Cincinnati suburb, Dr. John Mattingly and his wife Madge live a peaceful life—until their home is broken into. But this isn't your average burglary story. Their dog Max and cat Penny happen to witness the crime, and believe it or not, much of the story is told from their hilarious and surprisingly insightful perspectives.

The break-in sets off a wild chase that crosses state lines, featuring two delightfully clumsy cops, a kidnapped policewoman, and a surprising connection between the burglar and his hostage. The mystery grows as questions pile up. Why this house? Why now? And what happens when people (and pets) discover they have more in common than they ever expected?

The Burglar is a short, fast-paced read with a ton of heart. It’s perfect for readers 13 and up who enjoy a quirky twist on crime, loyal pets, and a bit of mischief along the way.

This book was seriously cute. I smiled so much while reading it and actually laughed out loud more than once. It’s got that perfect blend of silly and smart. Max? Total good boy. Penny? She’s got sass and brains. I would trust them with my house before trusting most humans.

The story is fast and fun, with short chapters that made it super easy to fly through. The bumbling cops added an extra layer of comic relief, and the unexpected relationship between the burglar and the kidnapped officer gave it some surprising depth.

Honestly, it felt like watching a lighthearted family adventure movie, just in book form. My pets definitely would not have been this helpful, so Max and Penny deserve all the treats. If you’re in the mood for something feel-good with a side of quirky chaos, this is it.

The Vibes It Brings:
🐾 Loyal pets playing detective
🚓 Clumsy cops on a wild chase
😂 Lighthearted crime with lots of giggles
🔒 Home invasion with a humorous twist
👫 Enemies forming strange connections
🏡 Cozy suburban vibes turn chaotic
📖 Easy read with short chapters
🐶 Goodest dog and sassiest cat energy

Charles E. Hutton nailed it. His voice had the perfect playful tone for this kind of story. He gave each character just enough personality without going over the top. I loved how Max and Penny's parts were delivered—it made the humor pop even more. Honestly, his narration added to the charm and made the story even more enjoyable.

The Burglar is a funny, heartwarming, and totally original take on a crime story. Whether you’re a teen or an adult who just wants a lighter read, this one delivers. It's entertaining from start to finish with a lovable animal duo and a wild cast of humans. Jeff Ross keeps things moving with a story that’s equal parts cute and clever. Definitely recommend if you need a break from heavier reads.

I didn’t think I’d get hooked so fast, but this story grabbed me right away. It’s a quick read, but it doesn’t feel rushed. The characters felt real, and the plot kept me curious the whole time. I liked that it wasn’t over-the-top or unrealistic—it actually felt like something that could happen. I finished it in one night because I had to know how it ended. If you’re into low-key suspense that keeps things moving, give this one a shot.
