The last line. The last words. The last chance.
Ifferon is one of the last in the bloodline of the dead god, Telm, who imprisoned the Beast, Agon, in the Underworld. Armed with a connection to the estranged gods in the Overworld, and a scroll bearing Telm's powerful dying words, he is tasked with ensuring the god's vital legacy: that Agon remain vanquished.
Yet there is something just as powerful: Fear. Ifferon abandons his duty and tries to hide away from the world. But when Agon's armies find his monastery refuge, he is forced to find his courage and embark on a life-changing quest.
Join Ifferon on a journey across the world of Iraldas that will lead him to brave new companions, through the struggles of many peoples, the siege of many lands, and to discoveries that could bring hope to some - or doom to all.
Experience the unforgettable start of an epic fantasy adventure perfect for fans of Will Wight, AC Cobble, and Michael J Sullivan.

The Call of Agon quickly shows it draws inspiration from Tolkien's works. The story definitely fits as the first story in an epic tale. Their is an overarching struggle of good vs evil, large armies battling, characters making valiant sacrifices, and suspicion throughout about the motivation and alignment of several characters. There are interesting battle scenes and of course a looming dark entity that spells doom if awakened fully.
SPOILER
Characters in this book do die off. Some deaths did make me feel sad that the character died while another is bittersweet. In this last case, the individual may finally find peace in death that they couldn't find in life.
There were a lot of characters and it became hard to distinguish a few of the characters by voice from the narrator. Add in the fact that in the beginning, there were two characters with similar sounding names and it was a little confusing for me for a while. Even though I mentioned this book takes inspiration from Tolkien's work, don't expect several different races that were present in the Middle Earth stories.
Overall the book was enjoyable.
One other feature that I really enjoyed in this book and I hope to see more of was named chapters. Normally, audiobooks just have chapter numbers, but in Call of the Agon, the chapters actually had names. This was a pleasant surprise and I hope more books have this feature in the future.
Familiar epic feel

Overall I enjoyed the book, but I never felt much of a connection to the characters, which left me indifferent to their fate. Despite this, the world building was good and the excellent narration by Simon Vance make this a book worth listening to if you enjoy high fantasy.
(Full disclosure- I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)

The story was ok. But I found the characters under developed and lacked the draw I love. The story behind it was ok but felt rushed as sometimes it became hard to follow. The narration could be a part of the issue for me, because it felt like he was rushing to tell it a bit too much.
I did enjoy the end (not sarcastically) as that's where things got my interest a bit. Sadly for me it was right at the end.
Many will appreciate the straightforwardness of the story and for those who want a story like that, this would be a great read.
For me just an average story
