About this listen

This book tells the tale of the fabled schooner, Rouse Simmons, the most famous Christmas story to emerge from the Great Lakes. This ship, loaded with Christmas trees for Chicago, sailed into the year's worst storm and disappeared in Lake Michigan on November 23, 1912, taking with it Captain Herman Schuenemann and about 15 others who were on board.

Listen to the history of Christmas trees, the many ships that carried Christmas trees, this one tragic ship in particular, its jovial captain, his amazing family, the discovery of this shipwreck, and the modern rekindling of the Christmas tree ship tradition - as crafted by Cris Kohl and Joan Forsberg, two of the best-known Great Lakes maritime historians.

I really enjoyed this book. There’s history of Christmas trees and traditions, sailing and weather on the Great Lakes, shipwreck search, and an indomitable family. It’s a good listen at Christmas, or any season.

Interesting, sad, and a good listen for any season

Beautiful story! This story is well structured and family friendly, although older children would benefit most from the many details and the true story of the ship disaster. The story begins with the rich background of Christmas past and how the tradition of Christmas trees began over centuries. It really brings you back to that era with Christmas elements such as tree decor, food, and ornaments. The last hour explains the sad story of the Christmas Tree Ship and the magical response by the ladies of the family, who, in honor of Captain Santa, kept up the Christmas tree tradition to bring joy to Chicago families for years to come. A poignant treasure that embodies the true spirit of Christmas.
