Publisher's summary

Ana Rosa is a blossoming young writer growing up in a poor seaside village in the Dominican Republic. At the young age of 12, she finds herself faced with turning points that will make up who she is, watching her brother's search for a future, learning to dance and to love, and finding out what it means to be a part of a community.

But in a country where words are feared, Ana Rosa must struggle to find her own voice and the means for it to be heard. Gradually she learns that her words have the power to transform the world around her, celebrating what is most beautiful on her island and transcending even the most unthinkable of tragedies.

Lovely words

Each chapter begins with a poem that encapsulates the action. It is a beautiful story of family and society, power and helplessness. The pain of being not grown up, yet not quite a child in the Dominican Republic. This is a book of simple, beautiful words, yet the messages of pain and hope are powerful.

My Son's Summer reading...

Although it was my son's summer reading assignment I enjoyed it completely.

The story is sooo wonderful and well written for young readers. The first 3 chapter was like any other summer reading. It then takes a complete unexpected turn. I still questioned where is this Storting going.

It was too late when realized what direction the writer going. I had completely become vested in these characters in 90 short pages. The following 48 pages flowed so freely to my disappointment.

What a delightful experience. Thanks for sharing.

Lyrical Prose

Engaging, thoughtful, historical, and memorable. I enjoyed the lyrical prose. Great read aloud or listen aloud for grade 6 and up.
